Between ragged gasps Yua unclenched her trembling hands and covered her mouth to stifle the aching whimpers about to burst from her throat. Tears spill down her alabaster cheeks in stinging rivulets. Kakura’s words, the grim reality to them, strike at her heart like nails being driven into a coffin. The cries crash into her palms making her smash her wet eyes shut from the bottled up force. Shaking in despair she blinks to wipe away the bead drop paths that were burning into her skin with the back of her hands then inhales sharply to refill her worn out lungs. She could barely hear his fading footsteps over her choking sobs, the artic chill emanating from him was slowly ebbing away but somehow that only made her feel colder. Before the sound could completely disappear Yua tilts her grief-stricken face to the side and took a peek at his dark departing figure through soaked eyelashes.
“Oh, Kakura, please no…” she whispers brokenly as her throat tightens.
He continues on down the corridor, her small voice doesn’t reach him. His rigid stride never hesitates for a moment to even look over his broad shoulders. The healer wilts and hastily reaches to lean against the windowsill for support.
‘He’s gone? Died… with Mikazuki?’ A sharp stab pierces through her and she clutches her chest, gritting her teeth to stop more painful cries. He has confirmed her fear and it’s unbearable to accept that. Quickly in her mind she replays the time spent with Kakura since his sister’s death, searching for any welcomed sign of his old self but came up with nothing at all familiar. She watches with blurring vision until he walked out of her sight. The man she once knew so well and truly cared about for so long, a great Captain and a dear friend, is no more.
Now in the empty quiet hallway she stands away from the window and straightens up, releasing a slow silent breath.
‘He would turn against his own allies?! Cut us down without a second thought!’ Her frown deepens casting dark shadows over her eyes. The old Kakura would risk his life to protect others but now that he and the most important person to him are now dead, there is no point for selfless acts like that anymore.
At her side her fingers curls back into tight fists. There is no going back it seems. The incident with Captain Zurui was not an accident at all, it was only the beginning. This is a stranger that coldly wears her friends face and abuses his voice. He shows clear indifference towards others and the chilling warning he gave ringed with deadly promise, it all made her feel sick.
“What can I do? How can anyone help him?” her frail voice asks sadly to no one.
Even if he thinks he can never go back to the man he was, should she treat him different? Obviously he wouldn’t care about her feelings. There’s no reason to light up when she sees him and give a smile anymore, his new cold stare stops that in less than a heartbeat. No more useless damned tears shed to waste over his stony resolve. If he needs her for healing naturally she would come running, she will not let him die under her care and will be mindful of his scar agreement. She shudders again as she rubs her wrist where he grabbed her. His anger is something she never wants to see again so she’ll need to be extra careful.
She beats back the last of the sniffling and turns away to the wards. In the distance the sounds of almost like cannon firing echoes in from the open window. Back peddling Yua goes to gaze outside and her mouth drops in shock seeing blast after blast light up the Seiretei in rapid succession, growing louder and closer by the second.
“Captain Honoka!”
She rips her widened eyes away from the horrific sight to the voice calling her name just as flames swiftly race down the hallway toward them. Calling up a Danku she flash steps in front of the nurse and diverts the blast on either side. The blast knocks out window; shattering glass and lick heatedly out of the opening like the mouth of a dragon’s spewing its breath. The inferno last a few seconds more scorching and eating away at the ceiling and walls, sweat beads glisten on Yua’s temple from the intensity of it. Then in a plume of thick clouds the explosions dies leaving red tongues of leftover flames to finish was it started. Her heart was still hammering in her throat as she drops the wall and quickly checks to see if her nurse was all right.
“It’s fine Ma’am, really!” he coughed from the smoke.
“You sure you’re not hurt?”
“I’m sure!”
“Come, we have to hurry and reach the others, they might not be so lucky. Be careful! ” Yua ducks under the clouds and cautiously goes further inside avoid the blistering heat. The fires are spreading fast she pauses and looks around as a strange frigid wind billows through the quavering flames. Her shallow breathes are misting from her mouth and she watches in awe as ice began to blanket the hallway, seizing over the fiery debris with a high hissing sound until the flames are overwhelmed and die in a frozen landscape. The crunching of footsteps on the snow brings with the answer to her unspoken question.
“Hey! Good thing I was here…”
Kai marches into view, his zanpakuto drawn and glowing at his side. His captain’s Haori is blackened. He looks at them with deep concern. “Are you okay?”
Yua smiles gratefully at him. “Yes, thank you! But what about you?”
“I’m fine but there are a few people that need your attention.” Kai grimly states. “It’s this way, the injured are being moved outside.” Yua nods and beckons the nurse to follow her.
“My lieutenant?” She asked worriedly as he walks beside her.
“He was closer to the blast site but he was a quick draw and shielded a group before it could reach them.”
She let out a sigh of relief. Once outside she immediately accesses the scene and rushes to take charge. Stretchers of patients and nurses alike were laid out on the lawn at a safe distance from the bombed barracks. Those of the staff who are able to stand are helping the seriously wounded. Among them she saw Nakama, a stripe of clothe covered his right cheek very close to his steel gray eye, he was looking over a patient with his green healing kido. His face was hard and anger filled. A few feet from him Quidel was standing up having his shoulder wrapped by an anxious female nurse.
“Burned again Erlantz?” she walks over next to him and starts treating a burn victim lying on the ground next to him.
“I can’t help it if I’m so hot.” He shrugs lightly and winces.
Yua rolls her eyes and stands up to smack the back of his head sharply with her hand. “This isn’t a laughing matter!” she bends down again.
“I know, believe me.” He rubs the sore spot on his scalp. “I’m going to go check on my Squad.” He sees the fifth squad captain come to see how he was. “You should, too, Kai. Those blasts were disturbing in number.”
“My relief teams will be sent out to all the sites and recover our injured.” Yua frowned thinking of the amount of damage the blasts may have caused.
