Ok, Yoshi here,

(THIS IS MY WORST ACCIDENT EVER!!!)
We met up at school and we were eating apples off the same plate because Birdo was doing her work slowly and the teacher wouldn't let her go until she finishes so she begged me to wait for her so I did (what? I'm a nice guy OK?). We were the last one's down and there was one plate I said Birdo could have the plate and I just to my eating trick (I toss my food into the air and catch it with my tongue) she refused to so we ate of the same plate. At least she did I always eat by eating EVERY THING (including the plate) and spit the plate out....

BIrdo kissed my butt in front of the whole class during my presentation. This is my 100% answer: girl, but was NEVER a boy.
the fact is Birdo wasn't so good being a boy in the first few Mario games. So, the creators cut him out, But came back with the name Birdo I say Birdo (old one) was Birdo's (now's one) Dad her dad must have wanted to show the world what a dad he was, I think he's mad!
