Magneto was a major part of the original Secret Wars back in 1984, but it looks he might not even make it to 2015's.
Newsarama has learned that the ongoing Magneto series will be one of the titles included in the Last Days umbrella of titles tying into the overarching Secret Wars event. Marvel SVP of Publishing and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort told Newsarama Monday that series under this umbrella will feature "the final stories" of these characters within the current continuity.
"The Last Days story is really about legacy," says Magneto series writer Cullen Bunn about the arc beginning with May's #18. "Throughout the series thus far, we've looked at the history of this character and we've looked at the legacy he's carving out for himself. Magneto sees the world ending. That would mean that everything he's worked for... all the terrible things he's done... would be for nothing. He has fought to save mutants, and now everything is going to be wiped out. Magneto simply cannot allow that to happen. He sets out to save the world, and he'll stop at nothing to do so."
Although this four-issue arc takes place during the intra-dimensional events of Secret Wars, Bunn says he's keeping this series "pretty grounded."
"Admittedly, the Last Days arc is going to open the floodgates a little bit and there will be some elements that are quite a bit bigger than what we've seen before. But I don't think you'll be seeing Anti-Magneto and his Sentinel Dino-Riding X-Force this time around."
That being said, Bunn says that other supporting characters from the Magneto series such as Briar, the Marauders and various S.H.I.E.L.D. agents who've been in pursuit of Magneto will be in this arc - as well as series artist Javi Fernandez and cover artist David Yardin. But also, a surprise in the form of a character related to Magneto who's had a controversial past.
"Polaris will have a big part to play in the series," Bunn reveals. "There will be some other key players, too, but I don't want to reveal too much about them just yet. Suffice it to say, Magneto may need help in his mission."
This story arc is projected at four issues, and given the finality of the promotion surrounding these Final Days tie-in books would suggest an end to the series and maybe even the character himself upon conclusion - unless of course, something changes. Bunn said these type of stories are well within his wheelhouse.
In a lot of ways, I've been practicing for this end of the world type of story for a while.
, my fantasy western, has been building toward a huge end-of-the-world story for the last 40-something issues," Bunn points out. "With Magneto, I'm only dealing with the apocalypse for four issues, but I'm using the event as an opportunity to focus on one man and how he manages as everything is collapsing around him."
When asked if this Final Days arc is indeed the finale of Magneto, Bunn avoided confirming or denying anything but did say if so, it would be apt.
"If the book were to end, I think this arc would wrap things up quite nicely," Bunn explains. "But what I'm doing also positions Magneto for some really exciting stuff that's coming up. Really, do you think something like the end of the world is going to stop the Master of Magnetism?"
