Remember when I talked about Dead Rising 2 and said that I liked it just a little less than Dead Rising 1? Well now it is time for me to finally talk about why I like Dead Rising 1 more. And I am aware of the technical flaws of Dead Rising compared to the sequel, but everything else, the feel, the stuff around it, it just captivates me more.
You play as Frank West, a cocky news reporter who has covered wars, ya know. He travels to Willamette, Colorado during a mysterious outbreak. There, Frank comes across agents from the Department of Homeland Security, Brad and Jessie, who are searching for a terrorist who is linked to the outbreak. Now, Frank has to survive for three days while searching for the truth in the hope of exposing the truth to the world. I am aware of the technical problems that this game has (Like I said before). For starters, the survivors are real annoying and can get killed at any opportunity. And Otis calling you is a real pain in the ass. And the game is pretty difficult with the ombes constantly grabbing at you. So why do I love this flawed game more than the sequel? Because it feels like a genuine apocalypse. The zombies are a lot more challenging but fun to fight off and maneuver around. It makes exploring the locations and trying to find the best path through them. They don’t feel like walking murder dummies like in 2. They feel like a challenge each time. Even if some times, the challenge is keeping your brain dead survivors away from them like a curious child. And I love the darker atmosphere of this game. I like that Dead Rising 2 doesn’t take itself seriously, and there are aspects of that in Dead Rising 1, but when it’s time to be serious, you don’t have Chuck making some dumb pun the whole time (Sorry, I don’t hate Chuck. But come on, man). And the psychopaths are a lot more intimidating in this game. I think it has to do with the lack of colors in some areas. Dead Rising actually feels like a horror game at times unlike 2. Psychopaths from the tragic Cliff to the psycho clown Adam. They feel more threatening in this game and fighting them off is a lot more of a challenge (For better or worse), and it makes it more rewarding to deal with them. Oh, and I love the concept of using anything as a weapon. Just something about picking up the nearest item just to survive is pretty fun. Or, if your like me and played this game a fuck ton back in middle school, you memorized all the secret weapon locations just to get the best outcome in fights. Yeah, I had a lot of free time back in the day.
Dead Rising is a classic from my childhood (I had a weird childhood). I know it’s flawed, and I know that the other games fixed those flaws, but I still love the feel and the story and the gameplay of Dead Rising 1 a little more. I don’t know what the future has in store for Dead Rising, but I hope that something good is down the line. And not Dead Rising 4. Never again Dead Rising 4
