Hello, everyone, and welcome back to Hidden Gems. Now, how many of you know Sega? Okay, now how many of you know Sega for anything besides Sonic the Hedgehog? A few of you? Alright, now how many of you actually owned a Dreamcast? Probably very few. Well, that’s understandable. Coming at the worst possible time, the Dreamcast was such a commercial failure. So naturally, being a poor child, I had one of them, along with a Gamecube, and wouldn’t get the Xbox and PS2 until much later. I loved all these consoles, but the thing that I loved about the Dreamcast the most was the game Jet Set Radio. It had great graphics, funky music, and wonderful extreme sports gameplay, though the camera and controls were kinda iffy. But, a few years later, we got a new game for the Xbox, known as Jet Set Radio Future.
~Story~
Jet Set Radio Future takes place in an alternate version of Tokyo, Japan. Young individuals have started forming street gangs, some of the most well known being the Poison Jam, a gang of sewer dwelling individuals dressed as monsters. Rapid 99, enemies of Poison Jam and have control over 99th Street. Doom Riders, a gang of bikers on rollerskates. Love Shockers, a gang consisting of only females. And the Noise Tanks, which are robots. You play as the gang, the GGs, who are fighting to take control of Tokyo by covering rival gangs graffiti with your own. However, you also need to watch out for Rokkaku Police, run by the mayor of Tokyo, Gouji. They use extreme methods to stop the gangs, more specifically, once you cover an entire street in graffiti, you are sentenced to public execution via firing squad, attack helicopter, tanks, or a giant robotic spider… I am not kidding. So, you as the GGs must fight the rival gangs to take control of the streets, because graffiti is the soul to express yourself. Yeah, the next time you want to write a poem or draw, don’t. Put that shit down, go outside, and spray paint all over the city. Actually, don’t, because this game clearly warns you that graffiti is a crime.
~Gameplay~
Let me tell you, this game is a big step up from the original Jet Set Radio game. The controls feel a lot better, and you are able to land on rails and perform tricks a lot better. The camera can still be a bit of an issue at times, but it never gets to be impossible. Going around and performing crazy stunts is a real treat in these games. It really makes you want to get all those combos, as performing combo’s gets you Graffiti Souls. Graffiti Souls are needed to unlock new graffiti designs, but lets face it, you’re not gonna use them. This game gives you the option to create your own graffiti, and you can create small ones, big ones, medium sized ones, all up to five different designs. I can finally live my dream of covering Tokyo with my own work… Or just create a world of penises. Just what Zone-Tan would want. But you can also collect movie tapes, which allows you to unlock new missions. New missions gives you a lot more to do and also allows you to unlock even more Graffiti Souls. And if you do collect enough, you can unlock unique characters, even characters of rival gangs. It’s as humorous as playing getting all the Gaps in Tony Hawk’s Underground and playing as the NPCs… In fact, Jet Set Radio can kinda be compared to Tony Hawk, huh?
When it comes to sports games, I am not a fan of them. However, I do love me some extreme sports games. Usually racing games, like Mario Kart, but I can also get some enjoyment out of a few wrestling games, especially the over-the-top and cartoonish style of WWE All Stars. But when I think of extreme sports games, Tony Hawk and Jet Set Radio come to mind. They are both games about skating, whether with roller skates or a skateboard, both have insane tricks you can perform to unlock new areas or characters, both have overarching plots that you can play through, and both have unique worlds to explore while listening to some catchy music, whether it be Tony Hawk's loud and proud attitude punk rock and rap, or it be Jet Set Radio’s funky beats. But Jet Set Radio Future is different in many ways. For starters, you can grind along walls, and even go up polls at a ninety degree angle. Jet Set Radio Future is much more over-the-top than any of the Tony Hawk games, and manages to be unique in its own way. Tony Hawk manages to stay in some sort of reality. Jet Set Radio Future is far from reality as possible, but that’s what makes it different from Tony Hawk
The best thing about Jet Set Radio Future isn’t in the music or the gameplay, at least for me. Their good, but my favorite thing about Jet Set Radio Future is the graphics. Now, I’m not one of those people who say this consoles better because of its graphics, ignoring any flaws that the game has, and probably being some shit middle schooler who has only played the latest Call of Duty game. No, I am not one to care about video game graphics. However, I can’t deny that Jet Set Radio Future has such an amazing art style. Jet Set Radio Future is another one of those games that uses cel-shading, the process of taking a 3D model and drawing it with a 2D style. Because of this, the game still looks visually pleasing even to this day. Any game that tries to look realistic today may look very advanced today, but when it gets old in a few years, it’s gonna look so ugly. Have you seen Goldeneye 007? Ugh. However, cel shading allows games to still look amazing, even today. Games like No More Heroes, Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, and of course, Jet Set Radio Future, still look amazing even ten years later because of this choice in style, and I think it will stick for quite a while.
~Ending~
~SPOILERS AHEAD~
Okay, so when you finally manage to take over most of the town and defeat the Noise Tanks, you find out that Gouji wants to take over Tokyo and the world… Because of course. He is using a giant radio tower to play bizarre music to control people and to gain the power he needs. Once he does, you must now enter his world and fight an evil monster Gouji. And this fight is not very fun. You have to skate up a lot of floating objects to reach the top platform Gouji is on. When you get up there, you need to spray him as many times as you can before he ends up knocking you off. Once he does, you will land on the ground and will have to climb back up there all over again. Only the second episode of Hidden Gems and already we’ve had two games with awful final bosses. Well, at least the ending itself isn’t so bad, with the DJ of the game, who has as much charisma as Three Dog from Fallout 3, talks about how the world was returned to normal and such and how there is no such thing as the end on the streets… Except there was.
~Legacy~
In the end, Jet Set Radio Future was the last of the Jet Set Radio games, as far as my knowledge knows. After that, there was no more Jet Set Radio games. There was one on the Gameboy, but… I don’t wanna talk about that. Jet Set Radio is only briefly mentioned now, having a character from it appear in Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing. Now, why would Sega not want to make sequels for Jet Set Radio or any other game that isn’t Sonic… Well… What do you expect? It’s Sega. Their almost as bad with their other games as Activision… Almost. But we’ll get to them next time. So, sadly, there was no other Jet Set Radio Game, but I can at least say that it went out on a high note. So… I can at least give it that much.
~Verdict~
Well, Jet Set Radio may not get another game any time soon, but I can at least say that for the game’s we did get. The… two, it was at least a bunch of fun games. Jet Set Radio Future was an amazing game for the Xbox. It had great gameplay, an amazing soundtrack, and some of the best cel-shading I’ve seen for a video game. If you have an Xbox and want to play an extreme sports game that is lots of fun, then I say you should try out Jet Set Radio Future. Jet Set Radio Future gets the ranking of Hidden Gem. Goodbye.

But, for some stupid reason, Lil Wayne's agent decides to tell him, but at a different place. So, he takes the main character to a recording studio and tells him the..... First, off, I must prepare you all for the stupidest thing you will ever hear. Okay, so, the reason why Lil Wayne is so talented is because he made a deal with the devil to be a good rapper. And if he tells anyone this secret, he will lose his soul......... WHAT!? Thats the fucking plot twist? That's the dumbest fucking thing I have ever heard. You know what, screw it, thats all I got. Honestly, nothing really happens in the fucking story anyway, so, fuck it, I'm done. But, hey, that's only my opinion. What's Your Take
