Hello, everyone, and Merry Christmas. Today is the final day of the 12 Days of Christmassacre, and today, I’ve got the best thing to celebrate it. Remember on the October Movie Marathon, when on Halloween, I made a review on Trick ‘r Treat, the most Halloween-y horror movie out there? Well, for Christmas day, I’ve got the most Christmas-y horror movie ever made. Of course, it was made by the same guy who did Trick ‘r Treat, Michael Dougherty. Of course, since Trick r’ Treat had a jack-o-lantern on each shot, this movie is filled with Christmas lights on each screen. So today, everybody, lets finish off the 12 Days of Christmassacre with the most recent and most Christmas-y horror movie of this event, 2015’s Krampus.
Now, in case you couldn’t tell, this movie is based on the fictional German monster, named Krampus. For those who don’t know, Krampus is a Christmas monster who, when children are naughty on Christmas, instead of Santa giving them coal, they are taken by Krampus and takes them away… Well, that’s an effective way to keep kids from being bad. I’d much rather take the coal after hearing that story. Then again, it’s Germany. They always try to fuck with children’s heads. Anyway, onto the movie of Krampus. Krampus follows a family getting together for the holidays. One boy, Max, is forced to be around his family who are rude, always arguing and fighting, and are never able to catch a break. Finally sick of it, Max loses his Christmas spirit, which summons the spirit of Krampus, who starts to stalk the family and begins his attempt of murdering them with evil presents, jack-in-the-boxes, his elves, snow demons, and evil gingerbread men. Those gingerbread men were the highlight of the movie. They were hilarious little bastards. The plot is as simple as it gets. Another slasher movie, I’m afraid. But this time, it’s a slasher movie with something new. It’s got Christmas overload.
Everything in this movie is Christmas. Everything! The backgrounds are filled with Christmas decorations, people are wearing those god awful sweaters, and all of the monsters summoned by Krampus are related to the holiday season in one way or another. Hell, Krampus comes after Max rips apart his letter for Santa. That is an extreme way to react to someone just losing the spirit of the holidays, don’t you think, Krampus? Speaking of Krampus, despite the fact that he’s the title character, he doesn’t appear until the very end of the movie. Instead, he makes room for all the other monsters in the movie and just watches from the distance until he does appear. When he does, he looks rather creepy. He doesn’t look like how I’d expect, but that’s a good thing. It’s good to see a redesign instead of something we’d all expect, so I think that it was a good movie on the creator’s part. Not that I'm saying it would be bad, but I just like how they changed it up a bit. Sure, he's got the antlers on the top of his head still, but seriously, that face. That is one face that I can't help but be freaked out over
Now, here’s something I should add. Sure, this movie has a lot of creepy monster, very quiet and dark moments, creepy designs on the living toys, but when you really look at the movie, it seems more like a horror comedy. It’s kind of a dark comedy, really, and always manages to have some very funny moments. Like I said, the crazed gingerbread that set themselves on fire to attack the family were a riot. If they sell any plush toys of those guys, I’d but them in a heartbeat. Though, I don’t know if they were funny on purpose. I don’t know why I laugh when I see them. Maybe it’s the voices or that fact that you can’t make gingerbread scary. Then again, knowing the creators previous work, I’m sure that they wouldn’t try to make something like goddamn gingerbread men scary. If I had to have one negative thing to say, the characters feel very stereotypical. It’s just what you’d expect from those kinds of stereotypes. Nerd, bully, fat kid, … girl. They are just kinda predictable. But, at least the acting is good. Even the child actors are pretty good. When you think child actor, you just gora, but they manage to do the job, really. Also, there are just too many jumpscares. And not very clever ones. Like, that one at the end... That's not a good jump scare. That's awful. But, besides that one awful jump scare, it's at least not bad enough to make the movie any less fun.
Krampus was a pretty good movie. They had a lot of good scares, a lot of good humor, and it is the most Christmas-y Christmas horror movie I’ve ever seen. It’s got a great style, a great cast, a great story, and just great everything. Is it Gremlins? No. I think Gremlins takes the title for best Christmas horror movie, but it is definitely the one that shows the spirit of Christmas a lot more… Even if it’s covered in blood and creepy monsters. It’s such a great movie to watch on Christmas and I love it so much. Unlike the 2013 Krampus. That one was a mess. Take care. And Merry Christmas.
