(This article contains disturbing visuals, disturbing themes, extreme and graphic violence, blood and gore, and mature subjects. You have been warned)
There are many disturbing things out there in the world, with each one being something haunting for their own reasons. Some people see things as being disturbing for different reasons than others, but we can all agree that there are some haunting things out there, that scare us more than anything that a game or a movie could do, due to how psychologically damaging they are to those who watch them. So, today, I am going to share with you another five disturbing things. Keep in mind that what I find disturbing may be different than what you find disturbing. I want to make that very clear. These are what I find haunting. If you do find these disturbing, however. Well, I’m sorry that I had to show you some of this imagery.
8:46
8:46 was a game made specifically for the Oculus Rift. In this game, you play as a person on the top floor of the Twin Towers, and you already know where this is going. The game was meant to show the events of the 9/11 World Trade Center attack, with the game being named after the exact moment the first plane struck the towers. As you play through the game, you can see people gasping for air, panicking out of control, trying to break out of the rooms, and even some breaking windows and jumping out of them to the ground below. The game was made in the span of three months with only two voice actors, and the team that worked on it stated that they researched hours of the events of 9/11 to create a very accurate representation of someone trapped within the Twin Towers on that day. It was almost too accurate. The game was hit with immediate controversy, with some claiming the game as being disgusting and disrespectful.
Kevin Carter Photographs
Kevin Carter was a South African photojournalist who was known for taking some rather dark photographs. While in his time in Africa, he took pictures of people starving, suffering from diseases, or were sentenced to death by necklacing, where the victim would have a tire with petrol put around them and set on fire until they burn to death. However, one picture that Kevin Carter is known best for is this one very haunting one. In 1993, when Carter was on a trip to Sudan, he took a picture of a starving girl, trying to make her way to a feeding center, as a vulture stood behind the girl, looking at her. Carter was told not to touch the girl, as she could be carrying diseases. It is unknown if the girl made it to the feeding center or not. This photograph is what earned Carter a Pulitzer, but that isn’t where this ends. All of the disturbing events centered around Kevin Carter’s career, and the amount of controversy surrounding his work began to weigh down on Carter. On July 27, 1994, Carter committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning.
Rendition: Guantanamo
I couldn’t find any images of this, as, because of it’s disturbing nature, it was cancelled due to extreme hatred towards the game. Rendition: Guantanamo was a game where you played as a prisoner in an orange jumpsuit inside the prison of Guantanamo. You can choose to kill the guards of Guantanamo in order to escape, or live the rest of your life in Guantanamo, facing torture and brutal executions. Those who have played or seen footage of the game have started to feel uncomfortable or even sick at seeing the violence and imagery of this game. After controversy broke out about having to kill U.S. military officers, they were changed to mercenaries instead. However, the controversy didn’t stop there, as news sources called them terrorists and even being a part of the group Al-Qaeda. The Scottish government demanded to see the game, and, upon seeing it, were so appalled, that the game was cancelled and the studio was forced to be shut down. It is also stated that the game would describe the flaws in the American justice system. That, combined with the violent deaths on American officers, you would suspect that the creators had a burning hatred towards Americans.
Elfen Lied
Elfen Lied is a manga created in 2002 by Lynn Okamoto, which had an anime in 2004. The series followed the character, Lucy, who was a Diclonius, a race of humanoids with cat ear-like horns on their head, that had the ability to create invisible arms that could tear people apart. Lucy, after murdering countless scientists and guards in a lab designed to study Diclonius, was shot in the head, but survived, giving her a secondary personality called Nyuu, which made her appear more childlike and friendly. She is found by Kouta, a person who is actually a very important part to understanding Lucy, and his cousin, Yuki, and must keep her safe from the team who wishes to recapture her. Though Diclonius in the world of Elfen Lied are shown to be careless monsters, they are actually portrayed as being anti-heroes, with humans being more evil than they are. The anime contains many hard to stomach scenes, such as violent murder, assault, child abuse, child rape, mass murder, thoughts of genocide, and one infamous scene involving a small dog being beaten to death by children, immediately followed by the kids being violently murdered and their blood splattered all over the room.
120 Days of Sodom
120 Days of Sodom is a movie that I know… personally, we’ll say. Starting as a book by Marquis de Sade, this 1975 European film was a film that has been banned from several countries for countless reasons. Taking place in the fascist Italy of 1944, four men of power decide to hide away from the events of the World War and into, what they claim to be a pleasure palace. They hire guards, prostitutes, and kidnap nine boys and nine girls to start their disturbing event. Throughout the 120 days, the four men begin to torture and sexually assault the group in so many ways that would be too disturbing for me to show, evenas images. These scenes include raping a girl as the others laugh, being forced to eat food containing nails, being forced to act like dogs as they eat human feces, and much more. The graphic sexual imagery in this movie is too much for me to stomach, that I had to pause the movie at points and take breaks in between. Though the movie is widely banned in different parts of the world, there are some who praise this movie, as it shows the tyrannical power and how some abuse it, but I just see it as being disgusting.
