When I saw the trailer for this movie back in the summer, I gotta say, I was excited. But I was also expecting disappointment, since Hollywood has a habit of disappointing me. But, surprisingly enough, this movie was awesome. Now, originally, I was going to review Halloween 3 instead of this movie, but I just had to talk about. So for all of you who badly wanted that Halloween 3 review, here is is in short. It has witchcraft and no Myers. It’s different, so it sucks (Seriously though, it is not a good movie). Now, with that out of the way, let’s talk about the clearly better movie, Don’t Breathe.
Now, before I talk about this movie, I want to tell you something. Please, don’t read this review… Well, I mean, read it. But at least watch the movie first. It’s better if you know nothing about this movie before watching it. So the movie follows a group of three thieves. Rocky, a girl who wants to leave for California with her little sister. Alex, a guy whose father runs a security company, allowing them to break into houses. And Money, an asshole who is clearly just there to be killed off. They want to do one last bust together, and decide to rob a war veteran who lost his daughter and is holding onto over three hundred thousand dollars. However, he is also blind. When they break into the house, it turns out that, while he is blind, he uses the rest of his senses to find the three and try to kill them all, while they try to escape from his house (Except Money, because obviously). The first thing that I liked about this movie was the fact that instead of creating another bland slasher movie, they decided to give us a movie about something completely new. Being trapped with a killer, in the killer's house, who just so happens to be blind. I gotta admit, that’s an ingenious idea.
I really do like the characters in this movie because they’re all terrible… Let me explain. The characters in this movie are never good or evil. Rocky wants to do some good for her little sister, and Alex doesn’t want to harm anyone. No one gives a damn about Money, and the Blind Man is crazy, but is defending his house. All of these characters are flawed in their own ways. Sure, they could show some signs of being good people, all of them doing reasonable things, but in the end, you know that they can do some very selfish things as well. No one in this movie is black or white. They’re all completely flawed in their own ways. It reminds me a lot of the characters from Silent Hill 2, which, let’s face it, if a movie starts to remind me of Silent Hill 2, than it is an instant winner. Hands down.
I think the best thing about this movie was the atmosphere. This movie is very VERY quiet. Whenever Rocky or Alex are trapped in the same room with the Blind Man, it always manages to be very creepy. You just sit there and watch as they sit still, the Blind Man walks around, and a whole lot of nothing happens. I mean it, not a lot happens for a few moments, but that’s what makes the tension even better. Does the Blind Man know they’re there? What will they do to get passed him? And why can’t we just move to the next scene, I’m getting worried one of them will get shot… Oh yeah, another thing. The Blind Man doesn’t use a knife, or a hatchet, or anything that isn’t a firearm. Instead, he actually uses a gun. He uses a freaking magnum. And guess what? The gun is scary. You would never think the gun in a movie is scary, but how he always shoots at them, and how they scatter to get away, and how he always shoots at random moments, always surprising you. If you can make a gun scary, than you deserve a medal. This movie just manages to impress me in every sense of the word.
If I had to talk about one flaw of this movie, I think it would be that the jumpscares happened a bit too often in this movie. I watched this movie with my friend in the movie theater, and he told me that the tension from the jumpscares was what made them scary. Instead of disagreeing and telling him my opinion was better than his, I decided that he was a little bit right. The tension was really good, and the build up was much scarier than the scare to it, which I think works for this movie… Except for the dog jumpscare at the beginning. That one can go straight to hell. But, I still loved this movie. The tension, the characters, the setting. You’d think a small neighborhood in Michigan wouldn’t be scary, but they managed to find a way. By this point, it shouldn’t be shocking. They made a blind man, and guns scary. That should already describe how good this movies writing team is. And no spoilers, but when we saw the ending, me and my friend just stood there, mouths open, thinking “..... Damn”!
So yes, Don’t Breathe. My favorite horror movie of the year. People may say that The Conjuring 2 is a better horror movie, but I’ve never seen those movies before, so I don’t care. Please do watch this movie. It was worked on by Sam Raimi, the same guy who created Evil Dead. Watch this movie while it’s still in theaters. It’s totally worth your time. I had to grow a small goatee just to watch the movie (I immediately shaved it off after watching it), and it was worth it. Please just watch the movie. It’s worth it, and easily my favorite movie of this year…. Or you could watch Suicide Squad…. I guess the gritty edgy storytelling is better. Take care
