In the town of Blackwell, Thomas and his daughter, Rebecca, are still trying to get over the death of Thomas’s wife, Emma. While living in Blackwell, they are told that the town is a very nice place, filled with kind residents and amazing tourist sites. However, after a few years living here, a place known as the Nightmare Hour is opened, where people are sent into their dreams to live out what they want. This is used by a man who kills people in the dreams, leading to them being killed in real life, without anyone spotting him. Rebecca, wanting to find what is going on, is given the Butterfly Vision, given to her by a dying butterfly. During this, Thomas tries to look into the murders in the dream world, to learn of a creature known as The Angel and of the town’s dark history.
Thomas - A 43-year-old widow who moved to Blackwell to try to forget his past. After the unknown death of his wife, Thomas moved to Blackwell with his daughter Rebecca, fifteen at the time. Though Thomas has been trying to show his daughter that he has changed, he still suffers from severe depression, mentally damaged from his wife’s death. During the Midnight Slasher incident, Thomas uses his nightmares to try and find clues of the killer
Rebecca - A 17-year-old high school student who lives with her father. Though she was an infant at the time of her mother’s death, her death caused Rebecca to be very anti-social, lacking the ability to talk, and being seen as psychotic by her classmates. She only speaks to her father, who she cares for, but worries about his mental health. During the Midnight Slasher incident, she is able to use the Butterfly Vision to find clues, but at the same time, is able to spot creatures that surround the city, giving the city its sinister atmosphere
The Judge - A large hooded figure dressed in the tattered robes of an old executioner, carrying a large scythe, floating above the ground, and one large bloodshot eye revealed underneath his hood. He carries a scythe that wraps around his body to the edge. The creature exists to kill those who have sinned if they do not kill someone to give him a blood sacrifice.
The Chairmen - A group of three men, who watch over human life to see how humans behave. The Sad, a man covered in self-inflicted knife wounds across his arms, sees humanity as a depressing existence, and is sad to hear about the atrocities in it. The Hate, a man with burn marks on his body, despises humanity, seeing them as monsters and that they should die. The Fear, a man with a bloodshot left eye hidden by a monocle, enjoys watching people being terrified and finds it humorous, though he is the only one seeing being scared as a sign of being human.
The Angel - A creature that is said to exist in the Nightmare Hour. Little is known about him, other than his presence would cause the destruction of an entire town
