#90: Another
Now, when people think of good horror anime, they usually think of When They Cry, Elfen Lied, or, hell, even Death Note. And, while all those are amazing choices (As you’ll see later on), Another is an anime that seems to be overlooked… Why is that. I tried asking this question with anime fans, and yet, even they don’t know why. It’s a shame, because Another is a great horror anime. The anime is about a boy named Koichi Sakakibara who goes to a new school in class 3-3, where he then meets a girl named Mei Misaki, who is ignored by the class. But then, students in the class begin to die, and it is somehow involved with an event known as Misaki of 1972. So now, Koichi and Mei need to find out what is causing these murders. Of course I was going to watch a show like this. I am a sucker for murder mystery. Call me an old man, I don’t care. Also, this anime got violent. Like REALLY violent. It’s not the worst I’ve seen in anime (We’ll get to that later), but it can get pretty gruesome. You see a girl get impaled by an umbrella in her throat, a girl get smashed in an elevator, and a teacher stabs himself in the throat in front of his class. Yeah, this show was pretty brutal. And to think they were able to fit all this, and a murder mystery, into 12 episodes, and an OVA. It’s not the best murder mystery anime (We’ll get to that later), but it definitely deserves more recognition.
#89: Yu-Gi-Oh
Now, if I were to tell you that this was an anime about people dueling with cards, you would probably say that that is the stupidest thing you’ve ever heard…. One, you’ve obviously never heard of Beyblade, because it’s much stupider. and two, you obviously haven’t seen Yu-Gi-Oh. The series is about Yugi, who solve the Millennium Puzzle, and ends up inheriting a spirit called Yami Yugi. Soon, his grandfather’s soul is taken and he enters the Pegasus Duelist Tournament to save his grandfather's soul. After he does, he finds out that the soul he has is actually an Egyptian Pharaoh, but has no idea who he is, which leads to Yugi joining the Battle City Tournament to collect the three Egyptian God Cards and Millennium Items to find out who he is. This show was pretty much Pokemon for the older kids. The designs on the monsters are some of the best that I have ever seen. It made Pokemon look like something for kids- Oh right, it was. Anyway, if you want a battle anime with a darker twist, then this is for you. Just stay away from Yu-Gi-Oh GX. It’s awful
#88: The Magic School Bus
“Why is there an educational show on here. Isn’t animated shows meant to rot your brain”? Well, normally, yes, but, not this show. This show was about a group of kids that were in a class where their teacher, Ms. Frizzle, would take the students on some insane adventure to learn about something new. The series was very creative, and was a very great way to entertain children. It was kinda like Bill Nye, a show I WOULD put on the list if it was animated. But, this show was good at teaching children something as well. Ms. Frizzle takes the kids to all sorts of places, like space, the ocean, and even back in time. OF course, you have the students. There’s Arnold, the coward. Carlos, the jokester. Dorothy, the bookworm. Keesha, the level-headed kid. Ralphie, the athlete. Tim, the artist. Wanda, the tomboy. And Liz….. She’s just a chameleon. If you want an educational show that is perfect entertainment for children, then this is easily one of the best shows to show to a child.
#87: Deadman Wonderland
Now, people have said that this wasn’t that great of a series, because it was not as great as the manga. HOWEVER, I never read the manga, so I can’t see anything wrong with it, so…… Deadman Wonderland is about a boy named Ganta who is framed for the murder of his entire class by a “Red Man” and he is then sentenced to death at Deadman Wonderland, which is a prison in the style of a theme park. Here, he tries to survive the prison with the help of a girl named Shiro, and he tries to find the Red Man and clear his name. Now, this series… is very violent. I mean, it’s easily more brutal than Another. It has a lot of scenes I’d rather not go into detail about, so, it can get kinda messed up. However, there are also the shows characters. Of course, there is Ganta, and the over-happy Shiro, then there is……. Well, you watch the show, and you tell me. Now, sure, people are gonna say this anime wasn’t that good, people are gonna say that the manga was better, people are gonna want to tie me to a pole and set me on fire for liking something they hate, but I don’t care. Deadman Wonderland is a very entertaining anime from beginning to end, and I just can’t see what makes the manga so much better.
#86: Sonic X
Yeah, I know. This is quite easily the worst Sonic cartoon to the public. To that, I say “Have you even seen Sonic Underground”. Anyway, the show is about where Sonic, his friends, and Eggman are sent to Earth due to a Chaos Control technique, where Sonic must fight Eggman to keep him from taking it over. Now, if you are anywhere at all familiar with the game, you will know the characters. Sonic, the fast blue hedgehog. Tails, the smart two tailed fox. Amy, the lovestruck pink hedgehog. Eggman, the evil genius. And Chris Thorndyke, that one kid that everyone wants to try and avoid at all time, but every time he comes on screen, people just want to gouge their EYES OUT- …. People don’t really like Chris. Now, the problem with this series (Other than Chris, of course), is the fact that it had a lot of stupid censorships. First off, I blame 4Kids. Secondly, this is why I watched the subbed version from Japan. Sure, it’s no good, but, at least then I’ll hear uncensored dialogue, like when Rouge is talking about S&M- Wait, what? Okay, yeah, I can see why THAT was censored. So, yeah. Sonic X is a very underrated show, and I wish it would make a big, uncensored comeback.
#85: Ouran Highschool Host Club
Now, I have not seen this anime until recently, and all I can say is “WHAT THE HELL! WHY HAVEN’T I WATCHED IT SOONER”!? This anime is just so hilarious, that I almost died laughing. The anime is about Haruhi Fujioka, a student at Ouran Academy, who tries to find a place to study, and ends up in the Ouran Academy Host Club. Once she is there, she accidently knocks over a valuable vase, and now has to work for the host club to pay it off, meaning she will have to be a boy to entertain female clients. The character, besides Haruhi Fujioka, Tamaki Suoh, who is a naive and narcissistic person. Kyoya Ootori, who is an intelligent student. Hikaru and Kaoru Hitachiin, who are two childish twins. Mitsukuni “Honey” Haninozuka, who loves sweets. Takashi “Mori” Morinozuka, who is an intimidating person. And so much more that I won’t discuss. Again, this series is very funny, from the twins shining a light on a dark figure, to Haruhi’s father coming home at the worst possible time. Again, this is one of the funniest anime I have seen, and it deserves all the praise it gets.
#84: Star Wars: The Clone Wars
Now, how many of you remember the Star Wars prequels? A lot of you? Okay. Now how many of you actually liked the Star Wars prequels? No one, good. That’s what I was expecting. Yeah, we all know the terrible Star Wars prequels. So, our hopes weren’t too high for the Clone Wars TV show in 2008. But, it was actually kinda good. Really good, actually. The series follows Anakin Skywalker, and his padawan, Ahsoka Tano, as they fight alongside the Clone Troopers against the Sith. This show was really good, show us all sorts of amazing action scenes in different animation styles. Of course, there was also all the characters, like Obi-Wan, Grievous, Dooku, Padme, Palpatine, and, as much as it pains me to say it, Jar Jar Binks. But, we’ll just pretend he doesn’t exist. And, I have to say, for a show that was made in CGI animation, it is one of the most well constructed shows I’ve seen. The environments are really well made, and it’s hard for anyone to say they do not look good. All I can say is that I am glad that there was actually SOMETHING made better than the movies.
#83: Dragon Ball Z Kai
Now, you all know that I couldn’t enjoy the original Dragon Ball Z. I felt that the fight scenes lasted way too long and the dubbing wasn’t all that great. However, Dragon Ball Z Kai is something I can enjoy. Now, everyone always says how Dragon Ball Z Kai isn’t that good… How so. It fixed all of the problems of the original series, making it a more enjoyable. Of course, I am sure everyone knows what Dragon Ball Z is, so I will try to keep this short. The series is about Goku, one of the last of his races alive, as he tries to protect Earth from any evil alien race. Of course, if you know anything about Dragon Ball, you would know that it has some of the best fight scenes in anime, from the awesome air battles, to the insane amounts of crazy powers that I am sure everyone tried doing at least once in their lifetime. So, yeah. I would say more, but, you all know what Dragon Ball Z is. So, I’ll just say that Kai fixes those problems, and I am glad that I could enjoy this series
#82: Sgt. Frog
Oh man, this anime. This is yet another anime that is overlooked. However, unlike Another, instead of being a horror anime, it is a major comedy anime. The series is about a group of frog like aliens whose ultimate goal is to invade and take over Earth. However, due to how incompetent and pathetic they are, they end up failing each time. They are also kept in the care of the Hinata family in one way or another. This series has quite a lot of humor to it, showing how the aliens try and fail to take over earth and how the Hinata family has to keep them from doing anything stupid. It is easily one of the most underrated anime. I swear, if it wasn’t for one of my friends showing me this anime, then there is no way I would have had this amazingly put together show on this list.
#81: The Amazing World of Gumball
Now, if I were to tell you that there was a show about a blue talking cat with a family of blue cats and pink rabbits, whose best friend was a fish with legs, and lived in a world filled with talking dinosaurs, ghosts, robots, and a bunch of other insane stuff, what would you say? Either you would say “What kind of drugs are you on”, or “You must have watched the Amazing World of Gumball”. Yes, this show is insane. Yes, this show makes no sense at time. But, yes, this show is amazing. Of course, the show is about Gumball, a blue cat, and his friend Darwin, a fish with legs, who just live out their everyday lives, but, in a world that is just so insane that it makes you question your sanity. Now, even though this show looked insane, it was actually really good. It was kinda like a show about growing up, but… well, more messed up. And that’s exactly what the show was, showing us all kinds of insane characters, but also never striving away from the stories moral that it is trying to show. And if there is a show that can teach kids something, then I say, show as much crazy stuff you want. Yes, it’s insane, but it is easily one of the best shows of this day and age.
