Now, there is this one internet flash game that I have played, and I love. It is a game known only as One Chance.
Now, One Chance is a Newgrounds flash game, where you make your own decisions and see what they do on the story. It sounds like a good story, but trust me, this story is depressing as hell. You play as a scientist, who has helped find the cure for cancer. However, as the story continues, you then realize that this medicine doesn’t just kill cancer cells, but it kills all the cells in the human body, and the scientists are now trying to find a cure for it. Now, I am going to spoil one of the games ending, so you can get an understanding of what is going on, so Spoilers ahead.
So, you read in a newspaper that says that scientists have found the cure for cancer, and you just go on with your daily life as a scientist, or you can go and cheat on your wife like an asshole with a co worker. however, the beginning of the game gives you a message that says “In seven days, every living cell on the planet will die. You have one chance”. And, it only takes until the next day that you find out that the medicine actually kills all the cells in the body. And the lab is starting to get into a panic. So much infact that one scientist kills himself.
You then get up the next day, and your wife asks what is the point, while your daughter asks why there is no school. As you drive down the street, you see that the population of people on the sidewalk has decreased. You then walk to work, where your boss tells you to go home, but a co worker says that they could create a cure if they work hard. Now, you could either go home with your family or work. I chose work, and I didn’t know if it was the right thing to do.
Then, the next day, you see that there are now protestors across the street, and that half of Earth’s population has died. Your boss then comes over and says that their could be a cure, but he says that he will need you to come with him, meaning you’ll have to leave your family again. You can choose to stay and not find the cure, or find it, but leave your family. So, I chose to leave, which, whichever choice you makes, results in something terrible. Once you get home, you find your wife had killed herself while you were gone, leaving you with only your daughter.
Days go by, and you then find that all the scientist died as well, and so did the remainder of Earth’s population. All that is left is you and your daughter. Thankfully, you manage to find a cure, but the problem is that you only are able to save yourself and your daughter. The rest of the world is dead and you have to live with it.
That is only ONE of this games endings. I would have looked at the other endings, except for one thing. When this game says you have one chance, IT MEANS IT! You only get to play the game once, and then it prevents you from playing, so, once you beat the game, you can never play it again. Very creative if you ask me.
Now, I love this game. It actually manages to tell an amazing story and make the player feel helpless in a terrible situation that is very close to reality. And only giving you one chance is amazing. But, hey, that’s only my opinion. What’s Your Take
