Hello everyone, and today, I have a more serious list for you guys. This list is the Top Ten Saddest Games that I have played. Now, I have to had played these games, so if there is a game that you feel should be here but isn't, then I probably haven't played that game. So, with that, lets start. (Quick note, this list contains spoilers for every game on this list. Read at your own risk)
10: Braid - Now, Braid is an indie game that I only recently got into, and I have to say, it is a pretty fun game. The whole point of the game is that your playing as this guy who is looking for this princess who got kidnapped by a monster. However, the game starts off at the second chapter for some reason. So, as you progress, you get closer to finding the princess. Once you do find her, the odd thing is that she runs away from you, instead of letting you save her. So, you follow her, and once you reach the end, she gets saved by this knight. So, incase you didn't notice, this entire time, you were the monster who kidnapped the princess... Just let that soak in for a bit so you can notice the sadness.
9: Max Payne - Now, this is a game made by Rockstar. The same video game company that brought us Grand Theft Auto. So, you'd expect Max Payne to be this big action packed game. Well... It is, kinda, but it's also pretty depressing. Mainly because this whole game starts off with the murder of Max Payne's entire family, and it eventually leads to the murder of his best friend. And, it shows Max Payne trying to find the real killer as he is hunted down by the police through New York. Yeah, you can see that things aren't so easy for Max.
8: I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream - Now, here is another game I got into recently. This whole game starts out with the extinction of the human race because a super computer went mad. The computer then traps the five last people on the planet and then tortures them for the rest of their lives. This entire game keeps showing how these people suffer from the computers tortures. And, the only way for them to escape, is to kill themselves. So, the whole game involves you trying to find a way to die. However, this game has multiple endings. One ending is where you defeat the evil computer, yet all five of them die. I'd like to point out that that there is the good ending. All the bad ones is where four of the five die (Which ever dies is based on you) and the last one alive turns into a jelly like monster. And, they want to scream in terror, but they have no mouth to do so, in other words, they have no mouth and they must scream
7: Shadow of the Colossus - Now, this is one of those games that uses the art of music very well. In this game, you play as Wonder, who is doing whatever he can to bring the girl he loves back to life. And the only way to do that is to make a deal with a spirit to kill the sixteen Colossi. So, this whole game has you explore the large open world in search of these sixteen Colossi. However, as you progress, you notice that these Colossi are not dangerous, and in fact, harmless. So, the whole time, your thinking, is this really worth it. But, once you reach then end, you then get murdered by a religious group because, the spirit that you spoke to was actually the evil spirit Dormin. So now, not only did you murder a bunch of innocent Colossi, but you have just cursed yourself, and now you have to suffer the consequences of your actions. So, the whole game ends with you dying. What's worse is that, the girl that Wonder went through all this for, is still dead. So, pretty much, this is what he deserves for killing those Colossi and freeing an evil spirit. And yes, that's how the game ends. And, it is pretty sad
6: Silent Hill 2 - Now, here is a game that is both scary and sad. Now, I love Konami's games. And this is one of them. So, when your not getting scared shitless, your busy trying to find out where James wife is. However, you find out what really happened. She was killed. So, now, all you can do is find out how she was killed. So, as you keep going around Silent Hill (Still fucking scary). You then realize what happened. It was the main character, James, who killed his wife. And, he then realizes the Pyramid Heads are there to punish him for this act. I think that is what makes this game more depressing
5: Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - Now, Majora's Mask is one of my favorite Zelda games, besides Wind Waker. But, that's due to how depressing it is. Think about it. Look at all the sadness around. There is a giant moon about to crash into the city, and the only thing people can do is wait for the inevitable to happen. Also, there is sadness everywhere in this game. Like the Kaife and Anju side quest, Lulu losing her eggs to pirates, so she refuses to speak or show any emotion, the Deku Butler's dead son, the masks that hold the spirits of Darmani and Maiku, a canyon filled with the dead, a little girl who's father has turned into a Gibdo, it goes on and on. And people say that Nintendo is always bright and cheery. BULLSHIT
4: To The Moon - Now, when I think of Japanese computer games, I either think of Corpse Party (OH SWEET JESUS, MAKE IT END) or, one of my favorites, To The Moon. Now, from the start, you think the game may be a pretty humorous game. However, as you progress, you see the real sadness of this game. This whole game is about two... scientists? I can't remember, try to make a dying old mans wish to go to the moon come true in two days. However, the only way to do that is to find out why he wanted to go. So, they go through his memories, and there, they realize he had a wife who died shortly before. And as you go back further, you see hoe they met and how it shows some of the greatest moments of there lives. This game also shows you how well the music is in this game, and it is used perfectly in this game. But, we then get to the real sad part as the scientists realize that the only way to make the old mans dream come true is to make it to where he never met his wife. So, that means that all the wonderful memories they had will never had existed. So, he does happen to go to the moon, but there, he actually gets to meet his wife one more time right before he dies. Like I said, this game uses music very well, and here, it is used perfectly
3: Heavy Rain - Now, this game starts off in a pretty boring way. This game literally makes you do everything in a quick time event, so you have to do everything quickly. I admit, it keeps you light on your feet, but, soon, we get to the real sad stuff. Later on, Ethan's son, Jason, dies in a car accident and he ends up in a six month coma. Once he's awake, he goes into depression and becomes distant from his wife and his other soon. Soon after, his other son, Shaun, gets kidnapped by the Origami Killer, and tells Ethan to do all sorts of things in order to save his son. Through out the game, Ethan has to do things that the player decides. And unlike most game, each mistake will render how the story goes. So, if you fail to do something, it's going to mess with the story. And the game can end in three ways. You could save Shaun and survive, but you can also save him, but die in the process, or you can just let him die. Yeah, this game isn't giving you much to work with, because the only way to actually save Shaun is to kill innocent people, complete robbery, and even cut off your own finger just to get more clues as to where to find Shaun. And, again, this game uses music perfectly. If you have a PS3, buy this game. If not, go buy a PS3 then buy this game
2: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots - Now, I love the Metal Gear Solid series. Even the lesser series is fun. But, I think that when Hideo Kojima was at his best was with MGS 4. In this game, Solid Snake goes through a lot. He is growing old, and, since he is a clone, he is starting to degenerate, which means he'll die soon. But, he still fights because he knows its right. He stops at nothing to do this. And, when he is going through an oven tunnel, I'm sure everyone was screaming "COME ON SNAKE!!! YOU'RE ALMOST THERE!!! JUST A BIT FURTHER!!! COME ON!!!" Yeah. And, the ending is probably the saddest of it all. Sure, there is some good, like Raiden having a daughter and Maryil getting married, but how do you think it is for Snake. No, he is not happy. He actually meets his father, Big Boss, and they actually have one of the saddest moments I've ever seen in MGS 4. It actually shows this while Big Boss is dying. Like I said, Hideo Kojima at his best. Hands down.
1: Mother 3 - oh....... Oh......... OOOOOHHHHH........ You thought Majora's Mask was Nintendo's most depressing game. No, that doesn't even come close to Mother 3. Why is this game more sad. Well, unlike Metal Gear Solid, instead of letting an elderly soldier suffer through so much, lets have a little kid suffer with pain, misery, and death all over the place. That's Mother 3 for you. In this game, Lucas, the main character, actually has to live with the fact that his mother was murdered and there isn't a thing he can do about it. Also, his father gets arrested for going insane about hearing his wife's death and Lucas has to suffer with that too. And if that isn't bad enough, his brother goes missing. So, Lucas tries to find him, only to find that the main villain, Porky (Or Pokey for all those other opinioned people) has a new solider named Masked Man. So, when Lucas meets the Mask Man, it is shown to be his brother, who was killed and was brought back to life by Porky/Pokey to be his slave. So, the final fight of the game is with Lucas fighting his brother. And, once his brother actually knows who he's fighting, he kills himself. Oh, and Lucas's brother is younger then him... Five years younger... Fucking perfect. A little kid just killed himself.... IN A FUCKING NINTENDO GAME!!! And worse, Lucas's entire quest to save the island from destruction was in fucking vein. Instead, Porky/Poky actually got what he wanted. The entire world was destroyed and now everyone will die. And yes, that is the games ending. And there are no multiple endings. This ending is scripted. So, yeah, a little kid has his mother die, has his father arrested, has his brother kill himself, has to go on an adventure involving lots of death and misery, and only to have the world end because he wasn't quick enough...... Yes, like I said, this is a sad game. Fuck, its the saddest game I've ever played. It has all that depressing music like To The Moon, it has those saddening deaths like Heavy Rain, and it has that super depressing ending like Metal Gear Solid 4. Yes, this is the saddest game ever, and I think nothing will ever compare to this game. Ever
So, there it is. If I missed any, let me know. I probably did, but you can tell me if you like. With that, I will see you next time
