'Maze Runner 2: The Scorch Trials': 3 Ways Film Differs From ‘Divergent’ And ‘Hunger Games’

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials" has been at a success at the box office despite bad reviews. Its lead star Dylan O\'Brien has been getting a lot of buzz because of his portrayal of Thomas, too.

Apart from fans of James Dashner\'s book series, people who are new to the world of "Maze Runner" have also become supporters of the film directed by Wes Ball. There are many factors why the film became a hit, but it is due in large part to its difference from other young adult movie franchises like "Twilight," "Divergent" and "The Hunger Games."

Below are some of the reasons why "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials" stands out among its peers.

One of the driving forces of many young adult films is the romance arc. While "Hunger Games" and "Divergent" are primarily focused on its female leads, Katniss and Tris, most of their followers also stay faithful to the franchises because of the romance their lead characters develop with their respective romantic interests.

Thomas (O\'Brien), on the other hand, does not have a romantic partner. There are a couple of women who are linked to him in a sense, but he does not pursue either of them in the same way other young adult characters do. Thomas is more focused on figuring out what WCKD is about.

"Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials" is like a horror flick, according to Forbes. Unlike other popular YA films, it does not only show action and drama scenes, but also gory and horrific moments such as the introduction of the series\' new villains, the Cranks.

Most book-to-film franchises have three stories to translate on the big screen, but "Maze Runner" is the only one that will not split its final book into two movies.

"Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials" hit theaters Sept. 18, 2015.
