I fit in just fine.
After the first three weeks, I found in extremely awkward. I wanted to do everything on my own, I was so used to doing things on my own that I wasn't used to having help. I loved the help though. I didn't have to worry about water or my hygienic needs. We had soap, even though it burned like hell, it was still considered soap. My favorite job was working in the kitchen and in the garden.
The men there, they are all like my brothers. I've never really had any real love interest, I grew up with three brothers. That was the only way I was able to survive, to think like the boys. I didn't weep all night, curled up in a ball. I did the first year on my own, yes. I couldn't stand being alone, and I was terrified. But, I knew that if my brothers where there, they would constantly be picking on my and calling me a little girl. That's why I sucked it up and got over myself. It was the only way I was able to survive. Look at me now.
"Shay! We need your help in the garden," Jared came running in.
I nodded, I was making rolls for tonight. I was one of the few females that could actually plow and dig up the dirt, while the other ones just dug holes in the ground.
I wiped my flour hands on the towel across from me, and when that didn't work, I gave up and just wiped them off on my new sweats that where too big for me.
"I'm comin'," I said, while turning on my heels and turning towards the garden. My hair was tied back into a pony tail, I didn't want the dough to get into it.
"You're going to go like that?" Jared asked, with a confused expression on his face.
I looked at him, dumbfounded. "Well, duh. I'm not going to a party or something." I arched a thin eye brow, trying to see what he was talking about.
"Right," he turned away from me with a smile on his face.
"What?" I snapped, snapping my head towards him.
He smirked.
"Nothing."
This wasn't going to be good, I could already tell. I wanted to stay and work on the rolls with Lily and Trudy, but judging how it was some type of mystery, I wanted to find out what was going on.
He directed me towards the garden, I noticed there wasn't many people. Trudy and Lily had left their stations, no Aaron, no Brandt, no Doc. No Sharon, Jeb, Maggie, Lacey. Where was everyone? I looked everywhere on my way to the garden.
It wasn't until we made it to the garden.
I could hear voices from all around. What was going on? Did someone die? Is someone missing? I began to get worried, I constantly rubbed my hands on my thighs, just a nervous habit that I needed to break. I began to grind my teeth, another bad habit. My dad tried to break it before the invasion.
As soon as my dirty, white Reebok sneaker stepped outside of the tunnel, everyone threw their arms up in the air, with a: "Surprise!"
I could feel my jaw drop, my hands where placed on my thighs from where I had left them. What was going on here? My eyes swiped left and right, everyone was holding items in their hands. Even the souls where there, although I had grown close to Wanda and Sunny over the elapsed time I had been here. Sure, I didn't fully trust the two, but they where easy to get along with.
"What... What's going on here?" I asked softly, trying to figure out what was going on. Was that... clothes?
"Isn't it your birthday today?" Ian asked.
"Yes, but-"
"We got Wanda to do some shopping!"
"Okay, but-"
"We normally don't do this, but no one tells us when their birthday is! So... We wanted to surprise you!"
"Thanks, but-"
"We knew you would only come to the garden, so we just threw it here!"
"Okay!" I raised my voice a little. Everyone had interrupted me, not giving me time to speak. I took a deep breath, noticing everyone had calmed down. "You guys didn't have to, I didn't know my birthday was three weeks from then, that's why I told you," I said, rubbing my hands on my thighs again.
"Oh, well. It's too late now!" Wanda said, a smile plastered on her face. I had no choice, I sighed.
