, CW chief Mark Pedowitz is standing by the post-apocalyptic drama, addressing the controversies that plagued the series in season 3.
After Lexa (Alycia Debnam-Carey) and Clarke (Eliza Taylor) finally consummated their relationship, Lexa tragically died in a freak accident. There was a swift outcry from fans, particularly among the LGBT community, who were upset a show as progressive as
seemingly turned to the TV trope of killing off a lesbian character just after a particularly happy moment in her life.
On Thursday, Pedowitz was pressed on whether showrunner Jason Rothenberg has since undergone any workshop with GLAAD to prevent further incidents on the series. Referring specifically to himself, Pedowitz said, “There’s been no outreach to me from GLAAD in any way, shape or form,” but noted that the network certainly understands the power of social media now.
“I think [Jason] had a great learning curve about what social media can do,” Pedowitz said. “In terms of the question of that, we’re believers in letting showrunners tell their stories. I’m a believer in letting creators tell their stories. If you start limiting certain things, you’re going to start limiting the ability to be creative. My take on this is I think there was much more of a social media reaction and how Jason handled the social media reaction.”
With that said, Pedowitz is “very happy” with the series, noting, “The show is an unbelievable performer in delayed viewing and in digital streaming.”
“I love that show,” he continued. “I really do, I just love that show. I was one of the people that encouraged Jason to go to a very dark show. To me, he knows how to tell the stories. We’ve had long discussions about the first part of the season last year in terms of it being a little confusing with the Ice Nation and everything else. Then it picked up in the second half of the season. It’ll be much more intimate stories this year.”
Pedowitz was then asked if he therefore encouraged Rothenberg when it came to Lexa’s death. “No, I encourage people to tell their stories,” he clarified. “Again, [Debnam-Carey] was not available. She was a series regular on
. She is a great actress. Jason had a way to do something to pivot into the second half of the season, and her death allowed him to pivot that way.”
But the “Bury Your Gays” trope wasn’t the only controversy the dystopian series faced last year. Shortly after Lexa’s death, Ricky Whittle’s character Lincoln was also killed off, with the actor condemning Rothenberg, alleging the showrunner diminished Lincoln’s role and bullied the actor off the series.
“Jason felt for a long period of time that he had written that character into a box,” Pedowitz said. “We felt it differently. There was a long discussion about this. At some point, we found that Jason had a great way for Ricky’s character to be written out so that Marie [Avgeropoulos]’ character could go forward in some way, shape or form. Ricky’s comments were about number of lines and stuff like that. Ricky was a great performer for us, but it is the showrunner’s right to [decide] how many lines an actor gets in a particular episode.”
