, fans are introduced to a new villain. And despite the fact that season 5 ended with the escape of a Nazi werewolf, he’s not the only villain coming to Beacon Hills when the show returns for season 6. Rather, showrunner Jeff Davis teases that the Nazi werewolf has a particular interest in the other, slightly newer villains in town.
EW has an exclusive first look at this year’s big bad: The Ghost Riders. As part of the Wild Hunt mythology that was introduced last season, the Ghost Riders ride into town on horseback, and chances are, they’ll ride out of town with a few new additions to their team. “The idea is that the Wild Hunt passes through your town and if you see the Ghost Riders, they’ll take you with them and make you part of the hunt,” Davis says. “They pick up the dead as well. They serve different mythological functions, but for us, they bring a lot of danger to Beacon Hills when this storm of Ghost Riders gets stuck.”
In terms of numbers, Davis says there’s an unlimited number of Riders, who have what he’s calling “a very specific talent that is unique to them and that we haven’t seen any other creature on
do,” which naturally puts all of Beacon Hills at risk.
star Tyler Posey adds, “The Ghost Riders have this power that nobody else has ever had on the show before and we’ve never showcased it. They’re in Beacon Hills for a certain reason, not because they want to be, so all of the bad stuff that they’re doing to the town is kind of just a consequence of them being there when they don’t want to be. Every other villain on our show wants something and has an evil goal. Theo wanted to be the alpha, the Dread Doctors wanted to create the Beast, and so these guys don’t really have a goal. They’re like henchmen.”
And unlike other villains, the Ghost Riders aren’t nearly as violent as some of Beacon Hills’ most memorable bad guys. “One of the coolest things about them is their myth is quite different, and you’ll see how it plays into this season,” Davis says. “Our mythologies tend to get pretty bloody. This is surprisingly one of the less bloody seasons of
However, that’s not to say the season is any less scary. As Davis reveals, the Ghost Riders were crafted to purposefully have a very “soulless” appearance. And as Posey puts it, “They’re not nice-looking. They’re f–king horrifying.”
