It was called Origins Of Star Wars 7 Villain Kylo Ren Revealed - Yahoo News
Here's some stuff I remembered seeing:
It looks as though there’s more to ‘Star Wars VII’ villain Kylo Ren than meets the eye… as new details reveal that his origins are shrouded in mystery.
Who is Kylo Ren? It’s a question we’ve pondered ever since his flickering new lightsaber was revealed to the world in the first trailer for ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’. But while Entertainment Weekly attempts to unmask the ‘Star Wars’ villain, it seems they’re raising far more questions than they answer.
“The movie explains the origins of the mask and where it’s from,” said J.J. Abrams. “But the design was meant to be a nod to the Vader mask. [Ren] is well aware of what’s come before, and that’s very much a part of the story of the film.”
Of course, it’s been rumoured for some time that Kylo Ren is obsessed with the legend of Darth Vader… and there seems to be a ring of truth to this. But was he trained in the Dark ways of the Force? It looks as though he may have taken that upon himself…
“The lightsaber is something that he built himself,” Abrams says of the controversial new design. “[It] is as dangerous and as fierce and as ragged as the character.”
Seemingly hinting that the lightsaber was built without an expert hand, it seems as though Ren may not be a Sith lord… but rather, aspires to be one. Whether or not that’s how it all pans out on the big screen remains to be seen.
“As you see in the best of storytelling, and no doubt the best of Star Wars, these are tales in which an everyperson has to step up,” said Abrams. “I think that what makes Ren so unique is that he isn’t as fully formed as when we meet a character such as Darth Vader. And I think that there are two sides to the Force. Both sides, arguably, would see themselves as the hero of their story, and I think that applies here.”
But there’s one thing we do know – his name isn’t Kylo Ren.
“He is a character who came to the name Kylo Ren when he joined a group called the Knights of Ren,” explained Abrams. Who are the Knights of Ren? For the time being, we have no idea. But I get the feeling that Kylo isn’t alone in his obsession over Darth Vader.
As for the character’s name, it looks as though the surname ‘Ren’ may have been passed to him in the same way that ‘Darth’ was revealed to be a title, and not a name itself. A moniker of the Knights of Ren, perhaps?
“He is not your prototypical moustache-twirling bad guy,” J.J. Abrams explained. “He’s a little bit more complex than that, and it was a great joy to work with Adam Driver on this role, because he threw himself into it in a deep and remarkable way.”
Of course, the implications of Kylo Ren’s name are far more important than anything we’ve learned about him so far. Who is Kylo Ren? And more importantly, where has he come from?
Back when ‘Star Wars VII’ was first announced, there was lots of speculation that the villain would be in same way related to the original ‘Star Wars’ trio – many fans wondering whether he would be the son of Han and Leia.
Could this be the case? For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But for now, Kylo Ren’s origins have become even more mysterious.
‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ heads to cinemas on 18 December 2015.
