Penguins of Madagascar Question

Why do many people believe that Rico is from Antarctica?

I’ve read online in many places references to Rico having originally been from Antarctica. However, no canon work has ever suggested or confirmed such to be true. (“Canon” refers to anything created by the author[s], such as either of the “Madagascar” movies or the TV show “The Penguins of Madagascar.”)

While I have, over time, come around to the concept of Rico hailing from the frozen continent without it officially being canon, I wonder how the idea first came to light. I think it’s because of the power and speed of the Internet in perpetuating the rumor.

What say you?

Actually, there are some clues that can show you that Rico is from Antartica.
Clue #1: He can puke. Only women penguins from antartcia puke. He is not a women but i guess he got taught or something.
Clue #2: In an episode, skipper says something about Rico still *(something something) so I'm guessing he was the last one.
Clue #3: I did some research on wikipedia (I know it aint a very reliable site) But yeah its says that rico is the only penguins from antartcia.
Hope this helps ;)

It’s fun to try to find little clues like that. As for the Wikipedia “clue,” it’s best to not rely too heavily on it for information on Rico. Wikipedia requires content to be encyclopedic and verifiable. While I personally have come to believe that Rico is from Antarctica, since no direct and absolute mention of this has ever been made in the movies or the TV show, I have in the past added “citation needed” tags and have entirely removed such speculation on Rico there.

Male penguins can throw up. I don't know if this is for all penguin species, but the emperors can. If they couldn't, the baby would miss its first vital meal, cause he's the first parent they meet

I feel like fanfics had a lot to do with it. I mean think about it, Rico defiantly seems like he was raised in the wild so it makes sense to assume that he was. Plus saying he was born in the wild makes for a much more interesting story.

I agree on the fanfic influence. That’s certainly a big part of the Internet acting to spread the speculation. While I have come to believe that Rico is originally from Antarctica, my theory is that he wasn’t there too long, however. I base this on the fact that in the “Madagascar” movie, since the penguins didn’t seem to like Antarctica once they got there, they must not have known what to expect beforehand. Had Rico been there long enough to remember it, he probably would have said (or tried to say via a mumble or two) what the climate and conditions of the continent were like before they all set off for it.

I sya that maybe people were using their imagination when they wrote their stuff on Wikipedia. Either way, i find it pretty useful. And, also, it's fun to think that Rico got his wild spontenuity from Antartica.

That's a good theory! Except he was shivering with everyone else in Tagged.
But, then again, he may have got his scar from a Polar bear, or something.
I firmly believe, however, that Rico was the first penguin Skipper met, out of Rico, Kowalski and Private, because all the other penguins looked confused when Skipper told them about forcing Rico to suck the cobra venom out of his left buttock, so they obviously didn't know.
