Indeed this question has been asked before, and I've participated in several of the discussions about it. Simply (and much to my disappointment), no real penguin species exists which resembles our flippered friends entirely.

Several of the smaller penguin species have some of the team's traits, though I would rule out any possibility of the team being of the Emperor species. Emperor Penguins are just too large, close to four feet tall and between 60-90 pounds.

Instead of trying to figure out what the penguins' "true" species is, I have made up that they are "Classified Penguins," a species so classified that even Skipper doesn't know what they are.

They are a breed called: Penguin Hybrids. They originate in a studio called Dreamworks, where the first ones were made on a computer. They have no definate characteristics of specific penguin species and can do many things most penguins cannot do. And their head shape varies widely as well. You can tell them apart from other penguins because they look nothing like existing penguins. XD

Emperor penguins? Are you serious? Emperor penguins grow up to be 115cm tall. That's just a bit more than a metere. The Penguins in PoM are probably less than 60cm (two feet) tall. Emperors are way too tall to be these Penguins.

However, Little Blue Penguins grow up to be 40cm, so it is more likely that is what type of penguin they are.
