'Once Upon a Time' Bosses Preview "Something Old and Something New" in Season 5 Finale

Co-creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis tell THR who to watch out for during Sunday's season finale and look to how season six will be “a little something old and something new.”

that Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Prince Charming (Josh Dallas) will “find themselves in an old situation in a new place," and that theme will continue throughout the two-hour finale and into season six.

“We’re doing something different than the finales we've done in the last few years. We're not doing any alternate reality sort of story, whether it's going into the [fairytale] book or time travel,” Horowitz explains. “The story of the finale in the season wraps up within the two hours, but it also opens up doors and sets the table for what season six will be.”

After everything Emma (Jennifer Morrison) has been through, she will tone things down a bit in the season-ender. Kitsis says she will be “less reckless, but more determined” in her actions, and the person everyone should keep an eye on is Henry (Jared Gilmore).

“As Henry is becoming a teenager, and he's got all that power, I'd watch out,” Horowitz warns. Kitsis agrees, adding, “He wields a lot of power as the Author and he's the heart of the truest believer, so we're going to see in the finale what happens when Henry goes rogue.”

Another pair that seemingly will be safe are Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) and Belle (Emilie de Ravin). Kitsis says Belle potentially waking up from the sleeping curse and having their baby will be “dealt with next season,” but she’ll still play a “pivotal role” in the final hours while Rumple keeps “looking out for himself.”

Even though the Hades arc wrapped in the penultimate episode, producers said there is still a chance of seeing the Underworld again. “The arc of the Underworld story that we were planning to tell this year we intend to conclude this year,” Kitsis says. “Which is not to say that some elements of it may not come into play in the future, but this particular story has a set ending that we're planning to reach quite soon.”

Next season, they hope to bring back some familiar faces — like Ruby (Meghan Ory) and Dorothy’s (Teri Reeves) budding love story, which was detoured by Ory’s schedule — and bring back the other realms the show hasn’t dove into in a while.

“The paradigm for what season six will be is a little bit different than what we've done the last few years, and we're very excited by it. It involves our core group of characters, Storybrooke and flashing back to other realms,” Horowitz previews. “It doesn't necessarily mean a journey to someplace else. I think at the end of the finale you'll get a little bit of a taste of how we're going to approach it — it's both a little something old and something new.”
