thanks for bringing this up because i was thinking about the same thing..well i guess unohana since she may be older than jushiro and shunsui and is very wise. She is the only captain that has question yamamoto options when there is trouble in the soul society but again who will be in charge of the healing divison well than isane could become the captain of the divison and hanatro maybe vice captain

So I don't think any of the current captains are up to snuff. Kyoraku isn't strong enough, nor does he have the drive to be in that kind of central leadership role. Unohana better fits the bill in terms of leadership criteria, but by this point, we can be pretty sure that her fighting capability is too low. Admittedly, we haven't seen her fight much at all, but since she hasn't taken part in either of the two wars beyond healing, I doubt she would be able to take on such a central and hugely important role as the Captain Commander and actually show the strength necessary. Ichigo is a ridiculous option, not even a captain and frankly, not even a shinigami. He knows no kido, is still alive, has never been through the academy, and would likely make a horrible leader.

So what does that leave us with? Quite a few options, actually, none of which were included in this list. Ukitake is supposed to be pretty close to Kyoraku in fighting power, and he has a better temperament for a leader. I'd say he's still too weak and the sickness he suffers from doesn't exactly help him, but he should be here. So should Shinji, who is still one of the oldest captains, led the Visoreds, and has impressive strength. I'd say he's more likely than anyone on this list, if only slightly, since he's shown more true leadership and strength than pretty much anyone else, especially with his Hollow powers. Whenever he happens to wake up and be in fighting shape, Byakuya would make a decent Captain Commander as well, though I'd say he has his own flaws.

Then there's the ex-captains. Urahara has shown incredibly impressive strength and ability and has a lot of the qualities of a great leader. Sure, we don't know if they'd accept him back, but that's pretty much the only flaw with him. Lazy as he often acts, he's been central to a lot of the planning in the show. Yoruichi has the same problem, but again, she's shown great leadership capabilities and tremendous power. Tessai could take the role, he was the last Kido Corps Captain and obviously has a lot of strength and skill to offer. And why not Isshin either? He has displayed tremendous power, and we know he was once a captain.

But I didn't pick any of those. I didn't because each of them has a flaw. What's the flaw with any of the members of Squad 0? They all used to be captains, they each have more strength than any of the captains in Soul Society (which we can infer from Kyoraku's comment), which automatically places them above any of the current captains, we don't know whether they are actually capable leaders but chances are that at least one will be, and they're obviously going to be accepted by the members of the 13 Court Guard Squads. Just seems like an easy choice for me.

I agree with Whiteflame. Shunsui is not Captain-Commander material, even if he did end up becoming it. I don't know why people think Ichigo would be... That ain't gonna happen.
