Devs talk Azrael's role in Batman Arkham Knight, plus Arkham Knight's creation 

\'Life is Strange Episode 3: Chaos Theory\' review

Batman is a universe that has so many unique and diverse characters that it would be impossible for Rocksteady to include everyone that has helped shaped what the franchise is.

is featuring a slew of insane and challenging villains, and the studio even stepped outside of the series\' lore to create a new one of their own.

. However, before we get into who he is, Azrael will be back once again and he will be playing a significant role in the ultimate events of

. In a recent interview, Martin Lancaster, who is the lead scriptwriter on

, talked about Azrael and where he stands in the upcoming game.

"Obviously, [Azrael] appeared at the end of Arkham City, he\'s laid down this prophecy and now it is coming to fruition. You can see the city is in ruins, the villains have taken over. The Bat symbol is a way he gets Batman\'s attention in

. When you meet him, you\'ll see that [Azrael] sees himself as Gotham\'s new protector, the new guardian. He sees that Gotham needs a new kind of justice. It\'s up to Batman over the course of the story to figure out whether this guy is friend or foe," Lancaster said.

Some of the greatest characters end up rising out of the gray areas of narrative. It can be extremely intriguing for players to not entirely know where a certain character\'s allegiances lie, making for some tense and immersive moments.

This will mark the first time Rocksteady has created their own villain for the

franchise and it\'s their way of leaving a mark on the world of Batman. Adam Vincent, who is the senior animator on

, talked about who Arkham Knight is and what his mindset will be when

"Arkham Knight is just one of many villains that are in the city. The whole city is being turned completely upside down, Scarecrow is in charge of even the Arkham Knight. The Arkham Knight has his own agenda and his own plans, but Scarecrow is this kind of puppet master, sort of pulling the strings all over the place. Batman really needs all of his allies together to be able to overcome one of his toughest challenges," Vincent said.

Rocksteady sounds like they have really enjoyed getting to flesh out a new piece of history in the world of Batman. Lancaster explained more of Arkham Knight\'s background as well as the type of experience it was creating a brand-new villain.

] is one of Batman\'s biggest challenges yet. He\'s this incredibly powerful militaristic leader, he\'s got a whole army backing him up.

"Batman\'s is going to need all of his allies, along with the Batmobile, to take this guy down. He mimics Batman\'s suit, there\'s obviously some kind of personal agenda to this, the way he\'s styled himself, the way he\'s taken over the city, it\'s been a fantastic and challenge time writing this guy, but we had great fun doing it," Lancaster said.

Batman Arkham Knight has been delayed several times since its original announcement, but we now finally have a solid date for the game. On June 23, Rocksteady\'s final chapter in the

universe will arrive on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. In case you missed the
