I'm taking a history course this year, and I was supposed to write an essay on the reasons for success of Christianity. Enjoy!

Today, Christianity is one of the most wide-spread religions of the world. But its history is filled with bloodshed and violence; early Christians had to endure horrific punishments for their faith. There are many stories of martyrs being stoned to death; of Christians’ bodies being used as torches to light Roman feasts; of people being crucified, sometimes upside-down, simply because they refused to renounce Jesus Christ as their saviour. In the midst of such persecution, one would assume that such a relatively new faith would simply be exterminated. So how did Christianity survive as a religion, when so many other cults of the time did not?

Probably the greatest reason for the spread of Christianity was its appeal to the masses. Most of the early Christian converts were originally Gentiles, not reformed Jews. Though Christianity began as a small sect of Judaism, it wasn’t until Gentiles were allowed to convert that Christianity became so widespread. This was because many Gentiles, though not fully accepting of the...

That was the question Jesus asked the women at the well, as you read in John 4:7. Why would Jesus need man to do him a favor in the first place? Is He not the Almighty God who can do whatever He wants? So why would He need to ask a foreign women to give Him some water? Why would He ask you for a favor today?

You can respond like so many others do and say 'just leave me alone, I don't need you' and he probably would. You look at him just like one of these annoying insurance sales men that really don't want to leave you alone until they got you to either buy something from them or throw something at them.

But Jesus is not this kind of guy. He simply asks you for a favor and gives you an opportunity that will be for your own benefit in the end. Come on, it's no secret that the world is careless, best friends disappear when they are needed the most and the ones you love will eventually kick you in the teeth.

Yeah right, and now you try to tell me that the church is any different? Well, I wish. But to be honest, it's probably not the truth. But I believe that God himself is really different. He doesn't push, he doesn't condemn. He really loves you...

"Alright fine, he was not a good human teacher. Why should I believe he was the Son of God and not a liar?"

The Bible contains many prophecies about the Messiah written hundreds of years before Jesus was born. These include when He would be born, where He would be born and how he would die.

Jesus fulfilled all of these propecies in his lifetime. Some he could contol, such as entering Jerusalem on a donkey, but many others such as being born in Bethlehem or being betrayed for 30 pieces of silver were completely beyond His control.

Beyond all the prophetic evidence, Jesus told his followers very plainly that he was the Messiah and the Son of God. Jesus knew that these were very difficult things to believe and so he performed many miracles to demonstrate the power and authority God had given to him.

These miracles alone do not prove he was the Son of God, for many prophets and even Jesus' own disciples were able to perform miracles.
