A note about when this takes place. I’ve set this sometime between when Hope recruits Pixie to the team and before Schism. This period of time may have only been a few days for all I know but for my purposes it will last as long as I want. This is mostly because I really don’t even want to try and deal with lining this up with Schism.
Suddenly the voices stopped. The bugs started to dissipate. Mary stood up. Looking around she noticed that there were six people there besides her, her sister, and the red head. There was a girl with blue skin and red hair, a girl with pink hair and fairy wings, a guy in an orange costume, a guy walking on all fours, an African girl in a blue and orange costume, and a guy who seemed to have some type of deformity.
“Hi, I’m Hope Summers.” The first red head said. Mary suddenly realized she had been gawking for so long that the deformed guy was giving her dirty looks.
“Oh, uh sorry. Uh, hi I’m Mary. That’s my sister Kirsten. Um, thanks for helping me not die from drowning in bugs.” Shut up, shut up, shut up. “Uh, do I pay you or something? I, uh, I just really have no idea what to do in this situation.” And you blew it. Now they all think you’re an idiot.
“No you don’t have to pay us. We’re with the X-Men. Helping people is our thing” Hope said.
“Holy crap you’re with the X-Men?! They’re like big name superheroes right? Can I have your autograph? Here let me see if I have a pen.” Kristen started digging around in her purse.
“Since when did you become an X-Men
fangirl?” Mary asked.
“Since forever duh.” Kristen had finally found a pen and note book. She shoved it into Hope’s hands. “Here you can each sign a page. Make it out to Kristen. That’s spelled K-R-I-S-T-E-N.” Hope look confused for a second but then obligingly scribbled out something in the notebook and handed it off to the pink haired girl with the wings.
“Anyways, like I was saying we’re with the X-Men and we’ve come to recruit you.”
Mary’s mind went blank for a minute. She knew that the X-Men welcomed pretty much any and all mutants but she had heard that there had ceased to be new mutants not long after the Avengers Ant-Man and Hawkeye had been killed.
“Um, what?”
Hope sighed as if she couldn’t believe how dense Mary was being. “The X-Men help mutants. You are a mutant. So we are here to offer you a spot with the X-Men so you can learn how to use your powers and all that other shit.”
“But, didn’t new mutants stop popping up a while ago?”
“We fixed that problem. Now do you want to come with us or not?”
It was quite obvious that Hope was starting to get impatient and would want a quick answer. Thoughts flashed across Mary’s mind. What about school? Isn’t being affiliated with the X-Men dangerous? Is it more dangerous to be a mutant on your own? Would she get her own room or would she have a roommate? What kind of job can you get with X-Man on your resume?
“Um.”
“Dammit stop saying um!” Hope was living up to the stereotype of fiery redhead.
“Look I’ll need to talk it over with my parents first. Can I get back to you?”
“I’ll give you an hour to meet us back here with your decision.”
“Okay.” Mary looked around for Kristen and saw her pestering the deformed guy. “Come on Kristen! We’ve got to get home.” Kristen looked like she was about to argue but thought better of it.
“Sorry Kenji my sister is calling me. Here’s my number so you can call me later.” Kristen handed him a scrap of paper from her notebook then hurried off to follow Mary. Mary turned around just in time to see him drop the crumpled scrap of paper into a storm drain.
