Yay another costume review. I know that I’m cutting it close but at less I’m finally getting it done. Jean has had a lot of pictures during her run in comics, some of which were actually worn by Phoenix first (it’s a long story). Now I am going to give my unwanted opinion on all of them (or at least the ones listed on uncannyxmen.net).
1. Original Training Uniform
This was the blue and gold uniform that every original X-Man had to wear. It almost looks like a yellow leotard with a blue mask, sleeves, and pant legs sewn on to it. The outfit is completed with yellow buccaneer gloves and boots. A yellow belt with an X symbol completes the outfit. Very simple, and Jean makes it work. The only problem I have with it is that the over head mask looks better on people with short hair.
2. Modified Training Uniform
This uniform is pretty much exactly like the last uniform except for a few modifications. This one is more feminine with a low cut V neck and a pointy mask that doesn’t covered her whole head and only stays on by the power of magic. She also added a red belt. I do like this one better than the original but it’s still not one of my favorites. I think it’s the V neck. It just looks odd.
3. Marvel Girl Uniform
We have finally gotten to the infamous green dress. If you don’t know what I’m talking about this outfit consists of a short green dress with another deep V neck and sometimes consists of long sleeves. This was wore with mid length yellow gloves, boots, belt, and another pointy Wolverine type mask. I don’t really like this outfit because how do you fight crime in a mini dress without giving everyone a view of things that shouldn’t be viewed? And no one can say she wore something under it to prevent this because in Cable and Deadpool, Deadpool wears this same costume and the only thing under it is some gold panties. Iconic, yes. Practical, no.
4. Green Phoenix Costume
Yes now I get to talk about pretty much everyone’s favorite Jean costume. Even though technically when she first wore this it was actually Phoenix taking on the form of Jean. But Jean did wear it later so yeah. Anyways, if you don’t exist and have no idea what this looks like it is a long sleeved, turtle neck green suit with gold opera gloves, gold sash, and gold thigh high hooker boots. Lastly, there is a black neck piece with a gold Phoenix symbol on it. This probably has to be one of my favorites. It’s iconic and practical and very classy looking. Really if you say Phoenix this is what you think of.
5. Black Queen Costume
What can I say about this other than wow, and yes this is still Phoenix. This is pretty much Emma Frost’s first costume just black and without the fur. It is a black corset, black panties, black high hooker boots (literally), and a black cape with red lining. This would have to be my least favorite because it is so slutty, so very Emma, and so not Jean. Of course she was brainwashed so that does explain things.
6. Dark Phoenix Costume
Another very iconic costume and the center of one of the best comic book stories ever. Even though this wasn’t technically Jean again, this is still probably one of her most famous costumes. This costume is a lot like the green Phoenix costume but there are a few key differences that tell you to watch out. This costume is red with a larger Phoenix logo and no black neck piece. Dark Phoenix has one of my favorite costumes. The colors are great, the design is amazing, there is only one thing wrong with this costume and that is the fact that it’s the outfit of cosmic genocide. Whether you love of hate Dark Phoenix you have to love this costume.
7. X-Factor Costume
This is the first real Jean costume since Marvel Girl. This is the costume she wore when her and the team were posing as mutant hunters. It’s light blue with two white lines running vertically down from her shoulders and a diagonal line between the two on her chest. A white X symbol resting on the right side of her chest and a pair of strappy boots completes the outfit. For once she doesn’t have gloves. This is an okay outfit. It’s very simple and practical but it could use a little personality.
8. X-Terminators Uniform
This was worn at the same time as her X-Factor outfit but was for the under cover team the X-Terminators who helped mutants. It’s throw back to her Marvel Girl costume and Phoenix costume in terms of the color scheme but it’s more like her original uniform in terms of design. It is a green full body suit with the head covering mask and a large yellow X going from her shoulders to her rib cage. She also wears yellow mid length boots and gloves with this outfit. This uniform is better than her previous ones (I’m talking about ones she wore not Phoenix) because it takes the best of all of them, such as the colors, practicality, look, and combines them. It still has at least a few flaws and a few improvements it could make such as adding a belt or a non head covering mask. To be fair the website does say she changed the mask later.
9. New X-Factor Costume
Yes another red and gold costume! I’m not sure why people say that people with red hair shouldn’t wear red since Jean always seems to pull it off. This is a lot like her X-Terminators costume just red and gold, with a larger X, and a mask that just covers her face. She also added cuffs to her gloves and boots. A nice improvement on the old uniform I think.
10. Moira’s Modified Uniforms
This was a standard costume that Moira MacTaggert modified to have temperature control and all these other fun things. Jean wore it when helping Banshee and Forge find the missing X-Men. It looked a lot like her original uniform minus the mask and with higher boots and a red belt. It was very practical and the best take on the original uniforms that I’ve seen. Jean doesn’t seem to agree with me since she switched back to her X-Factor uniform as soon as she got home.
11. Even Newer X-Factor Costume
Yes she got another one. Same look as the red one pretty much just in blue and gold, a non face or head covering face piece, and shoulder pads. Jean, Cyclops, and Iceman all wore this uniform but I have to bet that Jean rocked it the most. This has to be my favorite X-Factor costume of hers. It looks sort of like her standard 90’s look just less bright and with actual shoes which is nice. And let’s face it, I’m a sucker for those face things.
12. X-Men Costume
Or as I refer to it, Jean’s 90’s costume. This is another iconic one for Jean most likely because the X-Men cartoon portrayed her in this outfit. It was a yellow (or orange) full body suit with and upside down triangle of blue on the front. It also had some blue shoulder pads and random strap type things all over it and one of those weird face things. One of the things I have against this costume is the fact that she is fighting crime in her socks pretty much. And I also am not sure what those wrist guards are for. It’s iconic but not all that great looking.
13. New Phoenix Costume
Jean adopted this look after Cyclops got possessed by Apocalypse. It brought back her Phoenix look but gave it a nice twist. It did have the colors of Dark Phoenix but thankfully not the insanity. It was a red short sleeved body suit with a large Phoenix emblem going from her shoulders to her stomach. She wore strappy gold boots, red short gloves, some weird gold straps tied on her wrists and had yet another face thing. Oh and gold knee-pads, can’t forget knee-pads. I like this costume but I’m not 100 percent sure why. Part of it is the color scheme but there are certain things I don’t like about it. Like the knee-pads and wrist straps, but all in all I do like it.
14. Leather X-Men Outfit
Jean wore this after Xavier changed the whole look of the school. Rather than costumes they now wore leather street clothes, and had a whole bunch of different pieces to choose from. Jean usually wore a grey stripped turtle neck with a yellow X logo, black pants, black boots, and a black jacket with a yellow X across it. I never really liked these costumes, especially the striped shirts. I am kind of glad that it was more of a civilian look but they looked like a giant biker gang. And if I saw that coming towards me I wouldn’t think they were trying to help me.
15. Black Dark Phoenix Costume
Oh man. Just really, oh man. This outfit is ten times worse than anything Emma ever wore. It is made of a black Phoenix logo attached to her chest that is suppose to keep the worst bits covered up (but fails), and very low cut black leather pointy pants. This looks more like a Batgirl outfit than a Phoenix one, and how does she get all those points to stay sticking out anyways? Better yet, how does she keep herself from falling out of it? We’ll never know but thankfully she didn’t wear this for very long.
16. White Phoenix of the Crown
This is the costume Jean wears almost exclusively in the White Hot Room. It looks just like her Dark Phoenix costume except white instead of red. This is my second favorite costume of hers. I think the color scheme looks good on Jean, the costume is classy and elegant, just an overall win. It is only barely beat out by the Dark Phoenix costume just because the red.
Well I hope this article entertained you for a while. I know that it was long but blame that on Jean not me. Tell me your opinion in the comments, or if I somehow missed any costumes, Be warned that even if I did miss some I’m not adding them to the list purely because this took forever to write.
