Writing Question

*I'll give props* Do you think pregnancy scares are cliche?

I want to add some tension to my story, and adding a pregnancy scare would do that. It's pretty unrelated to the overall plot, so it would be a surprise, but I don't know if that'd be too cliche or weird since it's out of the blue.

*I'm only giving props to good answers. One-word answers won't help me.

Adding something that's unrelated to a story might bring confusion for the reader. See if you can add some tension that relates to your plot or you could try to fit the pregnancy scare into your story but in a way that it still makes sense to the reader. Hope this helps! Good luck with your story! :))

In general, I find "pregnancy scares" cliche. Of course, it all depends on how it's done and what's going on around it. If it's unrelated to the overall plot, it would feel superfluous to me. There are all sorts of ways to add tension, and while many of them may feel cliche, they would probably be a better fit overall.

Well, I think random pregnancy scares are pretty cliché. Unless, of course, it links to another event in the story (e.g. sleeping with boyfriend) If it's not linked to anything, it completely throws readers off and confuses them, making the story boring.

Yes and No. I think that if it's one expected thing, then it's not okay. You do not want the reader to figure out what's really happening. If it's something unexpected, I think that it can be a good thing.
Pregnancy scare cliche. It also depends on what you are writing, but I do not think it's something bad.
