Star Trek is a franchise that started with a television series in 1966. Since then, there have been several Star Trek shows. In addition, there have been several films.
The films with the original cast:
The cast of the 1966 Star Trek television series reprised their roles in a series of films.
1. Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)
2. Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan (1982)
3. Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock (1984)
4. Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home (1986)
5. Star Trek 5: The Final Frontier (1989)
6. Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country (1991)
The films with the Next Generation cast:
Star Trek: The Next Generation was the second live-action series. Shortly after the series ended, the cast of Next Generation started appearing in films. The first film with the Next Generation cast also had William Shatner, James Doohan and Walter Keonig reprising their roles from the original Star Trek show and films.
7. Star Trek Generations (1994)
8. Star Trek: First Contact (1996)
9. Star Trek: Insurrection (1998)
10. Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)
The films with the new cast:
Films started being made with new actors playing younger versions of the characters from the original series. Leonard Nimoy appeared as Spock Prime in Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness.
11. Star Trek (2009)
12. Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)
13. Star Trek Beyond (2016)
My ranking of the film franchises from least favorite to favorite:
3. The films with the new cast
A lot of the younger actors cast as the characters from the original series do a good job. Also, Leonard Nimoy gives a great final performance as Spock. However, what holds these films back is the focus on action spectacle rather than the sharp writing and character development of the previous films. These films are decent blockbusters, but I don't think they are as impactful as the other films.
2. The films with the original cast:
The first film has major pacing problems, so it's less enjoyable to watch than I wish it was. However, the rest of the films with the original cast hold up really well, especially The Wrath of Khan. The original cast are a charming group of characters that are fun to watch. These films also benefit from having great actors as the villains, including Ricardo Montalbán and Christopher Lloyd. I believe that these films prove why the original version of Star Trek and its actors and characters are important parts of pop culture.
1. The films with The Next Generation cast
Patrick Stewart is the reason why I became a Star Trek fan, so any Star Trek thing that stars him holds an important place in my heart. The Next Generation has some of the best performances from the Star Trek franchise. That charm continues to shine in films, particularly from Patrick Stewart as Captain Picard and Brent Spiner as Data. The sharp, meaningful storytelling from the series is explored in the films. Some of the films with The Next Generation cast didn't get the best reception from fans, but I really like all of them.
