Over the years, several actors have played Batman's arch-enemy, the Joker. The Joker has been played by various actors that have won Oscars, as well as several talented voice actors. However, if I had to pick a favorite Joker actor, it would have to be Cesar Romero.
Cesar Romero has the honor of being the very first actor to ever play the Joker in live action. The Joker was originally going to appear in 1943's Batman movie serial. In fact, there was even a poster of the movie that had him on it. However, Joker ended up being replaced by an original villain. Because of this, Joker wasn't adapted in live action until 1966's Batman television series.
Cesar Romero didn't know about superhero comics, so he wasn't sure if he should take the role. However, after seeing how much fun the show would be, he agreed to do it. Cesar Romero was in his late fifties when he started playing the Joker, but he was such a passionate, energetic performer that I used to believe that he and Adam West were around the same age. I turned out to be way off. Cesar Romero was over twenty years older than Adam West, but he came across as young as his co-stars. He and Burgess Meredith, who played the Penguin, were in their sixties by the time that the show ended. Both of them served as early examples that people of all ages can do amazing things with superhero roles.
Cesar Romero's Joker is much different than modern versions of the Joker, and I mean that in the best way possible. Instead of being insanely violent, creepy and unsettling, Cesar Romero's Joker was a goofy, hilarious supervillain that caused Batman trouble in inventive, unique ways. Joker co-creator Jerry Robinson once remarked what made Joker special was that he would find creative ways of battling Batman instead of using just guns. This mindsight is greatly reflected in Cesar Romero's Joker. Instead of using guns, Cesar Romero's Joker would do things like become a phony artist, steal a surfer's surfing abilities and fake an alien invasion. These sorts of schemes are far more interesting and memorable than what the darker versions of the Joker do.
Cesar Romero's performance as the Joker was a true joy to watch. So many people complain about Cesar Romero not shaving his mustache, but that doesn't really matter to me. Cesar Romero's performance was an amazing treat to watch. His Joker is one of the most entertaining supervillains in television history, alongside Burgess Meredith's Penguin, Vincent Price's Egghead and Frank Gorshin's Riddler.
Cesar Romero was the first actor to play the Joker in a show, as well as the first actor to play the Joker in a movie. Cesar Romero last played the Joker in 1968, but his legacy lives on as one of the best Jokers of all time. Recently, an episode of Titans had an audio cameo from Cesar Romero. Granted, it was old audio from the original series, but hearing Cesar Romero's voice in a modern show made me so happy.
