The Vampire Diaries TV Show Question

Can anyone who follows the show tell me where it is in the story?(From the Books)

I read the first two and i'm on the third one, but I don't recognize anything between the book and the show, and some thins that happened to Elena in the third book haven't happened yet. For those who read it, can anyone help me?

the show no where follows the books in anyway. the books r kinda like a guide. it follows the story of 2 vampire brothers and a girl(elena) who looks like the woman they loved(katherine) 145 years ago. and is set in mystic falls. everything is different. typically in a tv series nothing in the book will be the same. b/c the need the tv series to expand and last for like 4 or more seasons hopefully.

that's what i thought. When i think of the show as just a show, i like it. but when i compare it to the books I start getting angry. lol
