I was wondering...

Jeremy's father has the same ring as John's, right??
So, how could he die if he was using the ring??

While John wasn't died when he was killed by Damon because he was using the same ring.

And what exactly is the function of the ring??

Jeremy's father had died in a car accident- something that wasn't at all Supernatural. The ring only protects you from dying if it is something Supernatural, such a vampires, that killed you. Therefore it didn't matter than Jeremy's father was wearing the ring, because you can still die with it on if it's something everyday that kills you.
