Fog and crows

What happened to the fog and crows?
In the beginning of the series there were fog and crows, whenever a vampire was close. What happened?

I miss the fog and crow! :( It was just Damon who controlled them so everytime they appeared, he was nearby. IIRC, JP said that it was too dark and didnt work for the show or something. Damn though. I really wish they stuck with the books on that and kept it in.
