why does elana look so much like catherine

i'm guessing isabel was in fact descended from the pearces (katherine's family) so elena is in fact katherine's great-grandniece or something - can't be direct family because "vampires can't procreate" to quote damon. oh and btw is there any chance you could try and spell at least one of elEna or Katherine right?
