It’s been AGES since I’ve written this. Sorry. I got totally obsessed with another Fanfic.

Part 26:
Lucinda’s POV:
We were going to suffer for this. We were going to suffer for this. It was inescapable and unavoidable, and I wanted to not think about it, but I couldn’t think of anything else. What else was there to think about? The whole point to existence and the whole reason Mistress trained us had been this. It was what we’d been working towards for so long. I couldn’t even remember life before I was ordered to lead The Army. This had been everything.
We were going to suffer for this.
The prisoner – Alec – had escaped. We’d all gone out hunting, and I have no idea why. Mistress trained us to never, ever leave a prisoner unguarded, so why had we been so stupid? So irresponsible?
I was very much to blame. I was supposed to be in charge. I guess I won’t have that job for very much longer. I might not even have my life. She’d probably kill all of us. She’d create a whole new army and train them better.
As I thought about dying, I realized I wouldn’t mind. I wouldn’t mind being torn to pieces and burned, never to live again. What I would hate, though, would be to stay alive, but as the lowest ranking officer as The Army. I wouldn’t be able to stand being one of the pawns who was ordered about by a new leader. I’d seen what happened to them. They pushed and shoved and fought amongst themselves. I wasn’t the best physical fighter. I had the whole army for that. My role was to keep them in check and disable our opponents’ special abilities. The Army did all the ripping, tearing and destroying.
I hoped she would kill me.
Please, God, I begged, let her kill me.
I doubted I would get my wish though. I’d never been lucky, and for her to kill me would just be too simple. I would be getting off too lightly - much, much too lightly. As I thought about it now, I realized that Mistress always seemed to know the worst way to punish us. She always knew who was most afraid of what, and how best to torture us.
How did she know that? Maybe she just listened, or maybe she saw it in our eyes, or maybe… Maybe that was her talent. The epiphany sparked hope in me. Maybe I could protect myself. Maybe I could protect us all. It was worth a try, wasn’t it?
So, I lifted my shield. I utilized my power, concentrating on that, only to drop it a few seconds later.
Won’t this infuriate her more? I thought. She’ll know it’s me…
I mused on this for too long. Before I had decided what to do, I heard the faint, ominous, familiar sound of a silk cape rippling. We all turned, all of us shaking, to face the darkest patch darkness. The shadow moved, billowing outward.
“What have you done?” the gloom hissed.
She was talking to me, I realized with a shock. I was at the front of our group. Everyone was cowering behind me, whimpering.
“Stop whimpering,” Mistress whispered, disgusted. “I can’t stand whimpering.”
Everyone fell silent.
“Now, you, Lucinda,” Mistress growled silkily. “What happened?”
I knew that, whatever I said, we would all still suffer. So, trying to make sure my voice didn’t shake, I answered.
“Mistress, the prisoner has escaped.”
Whenever we spoke to Mistress – which was rare – we had to say ‘Mistress’ before we told her what we had to say.
“That is obvious,” Mistress whispered. “How did he escape?”
“Mistress, we all went out to hunt, and-”
“You did what?” Her voice was smooth, with no emotion. That was terrifying.
“Mistress, we all went out to hunt. When we returned, Mistress, the prisoner was gone.”
“I see,” she whispered. The darker patch moved from left to right – Mistress was pacing.
“We would punish you for this, but… well, it’s rather convenient.”
I wasn’t sure I heard her right. Quiet, confused mumblings passed through the group. I wasn’t alone in my bewilderment, then. How was it convenient? And what was with the ‘we’?
“I would like you all to meet my new acquaintance. He has a task for you.”
Then, out of the shadows, stepped someone wearing a black cloak. He flipped the hood back, allowing us to see his face. His hair was shiny and neat against his head. His eyes were milky-red, and his skin looked dry, as though he was mummifying. And there was a strange expression on his face… he was smiling.
“Good-evening, Dear children,” he said, his voice smooth yet not as dead or as cold as Mistress’. “I do indeed have a task for you. Not a war; not a fight. I’ve never seen anything quite like you before. I would like to study you.”
Then his smile widened, and he held is hand out towards me. I took it, hesitantly, and felt a shock. What was he doing to my head?
