Need help with lyrics!

In the song Love Story, there's a part that goes

"...Coz you were Romeo I was a scarlet letter
My daddy said stay away from Juliet..."

Can anyone explain the "scarlet letter" part?

Thanks for clearing that up...I sort of had an idea like that (from the book The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne) but I wasn't sure.

back in the time period where the video is set not Sure what the name of it is but any way if you chaeted on your husband or betrayrd you family then they would make you waer a scarlet letter so eveyone new what you had done and so you would not do it agian. and the song love story is about a girls who's parents dont like her boyfriend hence the scarlet letter mataphor. ( she betrays her parents to be with him until her dad comes around)
