Sequence Two
One Month later…
Melik had finally given up on Reesa, or at least she thought he had. The occasional wave was the only acknowledgement that the two of them had. Had he really ended his mad quest, or was he simply taking a break? Either way, Reesa was very relieved.
The white mobian decided to reward this day by taking a nice walk down the park, in the mist Thursday morning, when the air was nice and refreshing. She enjoyed the sounds of the chirping, the fountains, and the grass swaying in the slight breezes. It was peaceful.
She munched on a frosty apple as she took her stroll, but soon felt a great amount of guilt from this walk. It was only just then that she had realized that she was celebrating finally getting someone to not like her. This of course was not what she wanted at all. She liked Melik, though she’d never show it, but as she had told him, she was not “safe”
She was thinking about how much Melik must have been hurting at that point. Did he simply move on? Or was he just sitting in a chair with his head hanging low. She never really took Melik for one to pout, or stay upset for more than five minutes. Maybe he was alright.
The slender mobian pondered to herself her options. She had almost decided to go and talk to him, but only almost. Melik wasn’t the only one who she had pushed away, though he was the most persistent. She would work on cures for illnesses in her science-building, but even then, she would never make eye-contact. The longest conversation she had with a fellow worker was “No. I didn’t do Prom. Now the bone-mass in this example doesn’t match with my…” You could imagine the rest.
Everyone was pushed away, because she thought herself unsafe. She was right of course, but it still was a hard thing to deal with. She remembered when she first came to this town. She was one of the many offended children, only she was a bit older than the rest. A young 14-year-old girl. No one took her in as a child, and those who tried to quickly changed their minds when they saw her. She was not ugly, but the traits of hers were very much fearsome, as she was recognized as a daughter… of a banshee.
She left the orphanage, and no one tried to stop her. She made a living for herself as, of all things, a mime. Her fur was already white enough, so all that she needed was black coloring in spots. No one seemed to recognize her traits there.
After a while she learned how to make herself look more normal, but could never figure out what to make herself look like. At times she would say that she was a fox, and others a cat, but in the end, it didn’t matter, as long as she was hidden. She quit the strange job, which she did not regret, and was accepted into a boarding-high-school. Some of the students were being given free-stay and housing, if they had a large enough score on the tests. She made herself one of them.
She was much better at science-related classes than any other. Her lineage was one that seemed to understand quite a bit about the mobian-body, due to their connections with death-timing. She was accepted soon after as an interne into Melcro-Science-Institute-Mark#1001. She was basically just there to proof-read work for the real scientists, but got higher up as time went on. Then she left the school, but did not enter college. Her IQ in chemistry and other science was so well-equipped, that she ended up learning “on the job” at the science-Institute.
She felt that she had to do something to make the world better, even if it wasn’t trying to make her world better. No one bothered her as long as she did her job, so that’s all that she did. She never went out for lunch, she never got a coffee, she never talked up with people, she never tried to kiss-up to the boss, and she never got bothered. She wasn’t invisible, but everyone just assumed that she had a rough life, and let her be. That is, everyone but Melik.
Reesa finally decided to simply get her things, then go to work. As she walked home however, she began to notice two men following her. They were both Overlanders. They wore dark clothing, and hoodies. She attempted to lose them in an alley-way as she turned a corner… big mistake.
The frightened mobian braced herself against the wall, panting heavily from the stress. “Hide somewha bettah next time, lady.” One of the men teased as they turned the corner into the alley.
Reesa quickly emptied her purse, threw it to the ground, then attempted to walk off… she wasn’t allowed. One of the men took an old soda-can, and flung it at her head. “We’re not heah for money. We’re heah for you.”
“I-I-I I don’t know anything about anything.” She stammered as she slowly backed away from her approaches.
“Right. Some girl who don’t look like no mobian Ah know, in Melcro-place, doin Science ‘spiremants.” The man replied as he grabbed her by the hair and shoved her against the side wall. It took a great amount of stress for her not to scream. If she had, it would have saved her, but it also would have ruined her life.
“See yo gonna tell us everythang ‘bout that li’l ‘institute’, and all their li’l creatures.”
“I really don’t know anything.” She whimpered. “I’m just on the cure-team. I- I don’t even work on actual bodies. I just-“ The man slapped her before she could finish.
“You lie again, and ah’ll cut ye. Got it!?!?!”
“Please… I’m in a peaceful place… I-“
Before Reesa could finish her sentence the man put a knife to her neck. “Seven, Six, Fiv-AAAAAAAAAH!!!” A mixture of cement and what appeared to be acid hit the man straight in the face. His face that was now burning off.
Melik jumped at the second from across the alley entrance, then knocked him out with greenish-metal-like claws, that were unnaturally long. The two attackers were unconscious, and Reesa had just realized that she had been in contact with an Acid Monster this whole time.
“… H-… how long have you-“
“Known? My whole life.” Melik interrupted as he helped her up. “Guess it’s safe to say that you could be a little more safe, huh?” Reesa gave a fake chuckle as she queerly walked by his side. She watched his arm as it faded from murky-green to silver and black.
Melik kindly walked her back home. She seemed to have a death-grip on his arm. She did not want to let go, but he did not seem to mind. When they arrived, he let her in, then she slammed the door in his face. He paused for a moment in surprise, then was about to turn around and leave. Reesa opened the door just in time.
“Would… would you like to come in?” She asked nervously.
“Oh… alright.” He replied as he walked into her apartment. He was swiftly ambushed by the protective Tiffin, who jumped on his head, and began to beat him like a drum. Melik did not react to the small paws on his hard-head, then picked Tiffin up from his scalp, with a small chuckle. “Is this your body-guard?” He asked.
“Something like that.” Reesa replied as she walked into the kitchen for a moment. “I’m… I’m sorry.”
“For what?” He asked even though he knew perfectly well why.
“For everything I guess.” Reesa answered as she walked back with a cup of water for her hero. “I just ignored you and everything. If… If I’d only known-“
“It’s alright, Reesa. I can’t say I would done the same thing, but I doubt I had the same experiences.”
“Well… I still feel guilty. I mean… I was so mean, and I kept pushing and-… I’m just so sorry.”
“Reesa. It’s, al, right. You don’t have to be sorry. You were in a bad time. I’m the one who should be sorry. You didn’t want to be bothered, and I kept pushing.”
“How did you survive the Refine?”
“Right onto that topic, huh?” Melik chuckled. “Well basically I was in a testing-prison for two months. They were keeping some of us for experiments. I escaped before they were able to experiment on me, then I basically just began as a singer/dancer on the street for a few years. After that, I ended up finding a job as a stock-broker, and that’s been my job ever since.”
“Did you ever find any of the other ones that they took?” She asked hopefully.
“I did meet one, His name was Ernest. He was planning on assassinating the President three years ago, because of well… you know. He wanted me in on it, but I said no, and ended up telling them where he’d be, but I sent them about three hours earlier, so that he’d be able to see them coming, and hopefully change his mind. He tried anyway, and got himself shot. He escaped still, and no one noticed his traits, but I haven’t heard from him since.”
“W-what was he?”
“He was another acid-monster. But he said something about knowing a guy who knew the Identity-girl. That’s the reason I be-friended him in the first place. He had answers. He said that he’d only give them to me if I’d help him though, and so well… I don’t have those answers now.”
“… He should have killed the President.”
“Why? It’s not even the same president from the Refine.”
“No, but he still celebrates the REFINE, and he hasn’t done anything to help our kind. That makes him deserve to die.”
“Reesa, I know you’re hurting, but killing someone isn’t going to help.”
“Don’t tell me this is going to be a while ‘Revenge won’t solve your problems’ thing.”
“Even if it was, it isn’t the answer. If he had killed the President, there would have been a huge investigation, and they would have found him. After that they would be looking for Acid-Monsters again, then Banshees, and maybe even the Identity girl. The world would enter some kind of panic, and everyone would suffer.”
“You’re acting like you know that will happen.”
“I don’t, but it doesn’t mean I want to risk it.”
“So you’re just going to live your life in the shadow of the people who murdered our parents?”
“The people that murdered our parents are dead, or too old to have a shadow. The people of today don’t have blood on their hands, and I don’t want any on them. If I need to, I defend myself, and I am trying to make a difference. I’ve just got to find the right approach.”
“Well… I don’t know what to say to help you. I’m not exactly a democracy type of person.”
“Me neither, but I have faith that something will fix all of this… someday.”
“… You’re an amazing person, Melik.” Reesa complimented in amazement. “Better than me anyway
