Sonic Fan Characters Question

Can I have just a bit of help with some character things?

I hate to trouble everyone, considering that I usually never ask questions like this... But I would like some help.

You see, I've got a new story/article idea in the making, but that's not what I need help with. What I need help with is a few ideas on how to make a gang.

In my new story (Which it will be centered around a character of mine named Jake "Agony" Maniacal), "Agony", as I like to call him, will be dealing with somethings that come back from his past to mess with him. You see, Agony was in a gang when he was fourteen (14), but he left the gang once he thought that their schemes and plans began getting too "over-the-top" (Getting too out of control, too dangerous, too deadly, too evil, etc.).

Agony, now seventeen (17) in the story, has been living with Baneful the Maniacal ever since leaving the gang. However, the gang (Who left Agony alone for so long because they thought he was dead or caught by the police) has found Agony again and are trying to get him to come back to the gang. Agony refuses because he doesn't want to "be pulled back into THAT life", and therefor sparks pretty much a "war" between himself, his best friends, and the gang that wants him back.

Now, why I posted this question is because I need a bit of help with coming up with the gang. I know that I want it to be a teenage (Or mostly teenage) with the ages ranging from about sixteen (16) through nineteen (19). Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions for how to MAKE a gang group of characters? I mean, is there anything that I need to focus on when making the gang? Is there any information that can help when making this little gang for my story? I just... don't really know how to make a group like that, so I was wondering if anyone had any help/suggestion ideas on what to focus on or anything such as that.

Well think over what kind of people are usually in the underbelly, what type of people are usually out of work, and/or prejudized against. It could be a species, someone from a rich family that hit it rough that people hate.

A lot of gang people are people who society are against, who turned to that life out of desperation and rebellion. If you know any people like that, use that as the basis.

Now that's not the only reason, that's just ONE of the many. Another would be drug addiction, or... anything really. Don't be afraid to go radical on them.

Sixteen to Nineteen, think lost boys gone bad. These are usually people that have left their homes, their families, and their lives, some want to go back but are too afraid, and some are too stubborn, while some are just going YOLO and wanting to live how they like, and since most teenagers are all "REBELLION!!!!!!", breaking the law is rebellion so cha-ching.

You'll probably want the leader to be insecure, and overpowering, not wanting anyone gone, because that means less power, and have a right hand man or woman who's all muscle, to enforce that NO ONE leaves, causing tension between the members who again, want to go, but are afraid. This causes instability.

But then there's the family idea. People who leave their family want a new one, so they find people "like them" and go with them, making the bond MUCH stronger, usually having them resort to emotions like "You betrayed us", "You left your family", and "We miss you".

If any of that helps, huzzah. X{D

i think you should give them a type of tough look and have them be loyal to eachother. They all should have nicknames (Including real names) And have a certain hideout and have a role in the nighborhood.

I do agree on the nicknames part... Or at least I thought of that. Usually everything I see on TV or read in books depicts all of the gang members having nicknames. And the hideout idea was thought of... And the role in the neighborhood sounds interesting. Anyway, thank you for answering! ^ ^

Adding on to what Tak said, it might be a good idea to define what rules the gang has in their society and why the gang was originally formed. Do some research in gangs and the type of crimes that they do and use that for inspiration. I know most gangs go into drug dealing so doing that could be one of the common goings on within them. There are also gang wars between one gang and another as they literally fight for turf to sell drugs on. So maybe even a rival gang could come into play here?

For designs, go google image search "gang member" or something similar to see what they usually wear. I'm thinking a dark, (but not to dark) unsaturated color scheme for some if not all of them to give that "corrupted" feel. Maybe even a few tattoos. (Not to many! Don't want to over complicate things!) Maybe they could all have some sort of logo that they all wear somewhere on their clothing (or skin) for "gang pride".

Huh... Okay! ^ ^ I think I'll do all of these suggestions (The ones about looking stuff up) to help get some inspiration. And, I really like the ideas about the darker color schemes to make them look more "corrupted". I also like the idea of a tattoo or some kind of logo to represent their gang and their "gang pride". ^ ^ Thank you so much!

The best thing I find to do when making a 'gang' is to come up with each character on their own. Don't think of each character as 'part 1 of gang' etc, create each character individually with their own unique reasons for being in the gang/ their own beliefs/ their own moral stance/ etc.

You could have a rather rich character who got sucked into the gang.

You could have a member who's from a slum or ghetto, who knows life is tough and deals with it.

You could have the 'smart one'- The kid who was picked on for being such a computer nerd, but now uses it to their advantage.

Make each character unique- that's the best advice I can think of for something like this.
