it works for that show, those characters and the way they are would not work as well in the relationships from the original

Having watched the entire series, I think Stanley/Michelle is the only one that remotely works. They added in the backstory that they'd been childhood friends and always had a strong connection which works better than Sid and Michelle deciding to hook up in series 2.
