That was a lesser reason (a contributing reason). But he REALLY DIDN'T want to have 3 failed marriages before 40.

A definite combination of both. He’s loved Rachel for so long, I don’t believe he ever imagined marrying her and then divorcing/annulment.

I think it was a mixture of both. He really felt like he'd be a failure with 3 failed marriages, but he also had enough lingering love for Rachel that he hated the thought of giving up on a marriage with her, no matter how much of a drunken farce that marriage had been.
