**In no way will this be a formal review. LOL This is more of a venting to some proportions**
In the United States, 'Remember Me' has been in theatres for about a week. Since then, I've seen it 4 times, loving the movie more with each viewing. Throughout last week and this week, I've been checking IMDB and the reviews from different papers seeing as to what they think of the movie.
Before the movie's release, there had been some negative reviews by critics, however, from regular viewers, they have all been fairly decent and complimentary.
Today, I looked at Yahoo today and they had a compilation of all the critics reviews. And... I have to say, I was little put out with some of them.
First of all, critics are bashing Robert for being successful because of Twilight. Even if I wasn't a fan of Rob, I would say that's out of line. He's not basking in his Twilight glory. Twilight was simply an unexpected phenomenon. He didn't know it would explode. And he's trying to make a name for himself. He's trying to seperate himself from Edward Cullen. It may take some time, but he is trying. Isn't that what Zac Efron is doing? He's still trying to seperate himself from Troy in Highschool Musical. And, just because Remember Me didn't earn as much money the first week, doesn't mean it won't in following weeks. In the upcoming weeks, the movie will be released in other countries and therefore, will earn more money.
Second, they are completely overlooking the plot and what it is about.
***SPOILERS CONCERNING THE ENDING FROM THIS POINT FORWARD***
The ending, we all know, is controversial. I get that. However, they are seeing what is on the surface. They are saying they used the ending as a gimmick and shock factor to try and earn more bonus points. They are also claiming that the writing is using the end without being sentimental to the audiences feelings. I completely disagree. Do I think they should have put a dedication to all those who died on 9/11 in the creditis? Yes. But, it doesn't diminish the fact that used the ending to tell the story. Remember Me isn't one of those movies that you watch for the heck of it. It has a story. It's trying to tell you something.
The story of Tyler. He's broken from family tragedy. He's broken and lost. He's on bad terms with his dad. He smokes and drinks, trying to fill the void. At the end of the movie, we are seeing him trying to sort out his life. He's starting to make amends with his father. When he's outside of his mother's house, Ally comes to join him. He's smoking. He says "This is my last one ever. I promise." He's made an impression on all the people he's loved just as his brother's passing did.
At the end, when Tyler dies along with the many people of 9/11, the script is telling us that all the people who were killed in that event, they all left their mark on our lives. We shouldn't remember the event, but we should remember them and how they played a part in our lives, no matter how long or how short it was.
The critics are missing that point. I can see why the topic is controversial. I mean, why would viewers involuntarily re-live that event? However, the movie was not focusing on that event. It wasn't used as a gimmick or dealt light-heartedly. It was a piece of the script. With the 9/11 attack, it leaves a bigger impact. Not only on the audience, but the story as well. The people who died that day, every single one of them should be remembered.
End of Rant.
My apologies if the article didn't make sense. I'm not usually angry at critics even if I disagree, but this certain movie, left me speechless in a good way. I feel very protective of the movie. I don't know why. I think it would be best if I stop looking at reviews! lol good or bad!
Despite what the critics say, I will remember this movie. It really planted something in my heart. It made me think. If you haven't seen the movie, don't go off the critics reviews. Also, keep in mind, most of the advertising for this movie was terribly done.
However, this TV Spot (link) is what the story is about.
