The American dollar's value has gone down exponentially in the last century or so. For example, apparently you used to be able to buy a piano for twenty-five dollars! (that was quite a while ago, though.) Also, we don't have the gold in banks to back it up! So, if the dollar somehow loses all worth, then we're screwed.

That's not bad. 1 gallon = 3.78 litres. Ours is $2 a litre. NZ is actually surprisingly expensive.
