What are props for?

I've been here for almost a year, and I should probably know what they are, but I don't. Do they do something special, or are they just a way of complimenting someone for something they have done?

They're supposed to be given to someone when you like a video, link, article, etc. they submitted or a comment they made. Complimenting someone's icon or motto is good too.

Obviously though, they're not really used like that anymore. Years ago there weren't walls on Fanpop and so people would talk to each other by propping back and forth. I think it mostly just stuck, and people like the look of having high prop counts. *shrugs*
