I recommend the Pellinor Series by Alison Croggon. The first book is called The Gift (The Naming if you are in America). The genres are fantasy and adventure.

I recommend watching Dexter on Showtime.

It's about a serial killer that lives in Miami, FL. He was adopted by one, Harry Morgan, when he was very small. His mother was killed right before his eyes as a toddler, and since then, his psych has been haunted by a 'Dark Passenger.'
His dad is a detective for Miami Homicide, and realizes that Dexter has a dark secret and a yearning to kill things. He raises Dexter with a specific code of morals to forever live by in which Dexter can only kill murderers, rapists, etc.
Harry eventually dies, and Dexter grows older and joins Miami Homicide working as a blood-spatter analyst. His sister, Deborah Morgan, is also a part of Miami Homicide, but she was never told of Dexter's 'Dark Passenger.'

Dexter, throughout the show, ends up facing a lot of challenges and leads a double life as a serial killer, but a serial killer that was taught to only kill murderers.

It's a fantastic show.
