Why do toasters always have a setting on them which burns your toast to a horrible crisp no one would eat?

My toaster doesn't have that. My dad toasts croissants in the morning and it's fine. It doesn't burn it to a "horrible crisp". Mine has a timer on it and I stay there until I think it's toasted well enough. One time my dad didn't watch it and the whole thing really was burnt to a "horrible crisp".
