Is this a good idea for a novel?

Its about these five girls, who are nothing alike, who end up being in a "special" class at their school. When they get there, it turns out that a birthmark on each of their necks shows off their special powers.
Shasta: lightning
Tonya: ice
Blackrose: darkness
Stitch: plants
Abigail: fire
They end up having to stop an evil force, yada, yada, and... yea.

It's a good start, but the way it is right now isn't as creative as it could be. The idea itself isn't the problem, it's just very simple and it doesn't sound very deep, and to be honest, ideas like that have been used numerous amounts of times before.

Try to build on the idea, fluff it up. If writing a book is what you really want to do, don't settle for good. Good isn't good enough, make it outstanding. Getting to that point may take you a while, maybe even years, but if you do it right, the end product will be well worth the wait.

Well, so far I think it's sounds good. And if a basic idea sounds good before you've even really started working on it, then it will most likely be amazing once you finish it. And to everyone whose kinda shooting her down without even really thinking about it, don't be mean about it. This is just the basic idea of it. You don't know anything about the characters, or how they got their marks and where they came from, or what " force of evil " their fighting, or what's even really supposed to happen in the story yet. I mean, come on. I say put a twist at the end of the story, or give each character their own personal problem or issue to struggle with throughout the story. Since I see a lot of people saying it's not really anything new, switch it up a bit. Putting some of your own original ideas into a story not only makes it more interesting, but makes it fun too. Trust me, I know. Hope this helped.. ^_^

And just in case you want more advice on it, you should probably put this question in The Writing Club. You never know what answers you'll get in here. :-P

While it is true that there are a lot of novels with that general idea - I really like that sort of thing so I would read it :) I mean how many vampire romance books are there out there? And I am slowly working my way through them all lol

That is a good idea, but I think it needs to be deeper. Make it unique, something no one but you would dream up.

I can't wait to read it if you write it. :)

Sorry dude, too cliche
Chicks with the special powers meeting for the first time. Probably in the end have to save the world, then chuck in some hot guys, jealously, betrayal, evil guys, unraveling the mystery of their birth, finding ways to control their powers. Typical story line.
And the opening is just to same-same and normal to make something outstanding from it.

That is pretty much the most cliche topic to be ever be written in teenager fantasy books, so no, not really.

Here are a few changes to make:

1. Don't have the typical evil Vs. good thing, its overused.

2. Don't use elemental powers (again overused)

3. Chop and change a bit, add in some things that would make it more interesting than the typical teenager book.
