Try to polite about the whole thing. Tap him on the shoulder and say "Excuse me, can you be quiet?". If he totally blows you off, keep tapping him on the shoulder saying "Excuse me."

Try it and see if that works.

^Keep doing it. You have to show determination. So what if he's a hard hitter? You want him to be quiet? You're gonna have to either keep trying or completely ignore him.
