Here's a transition of how people said "mahal kita" from the early times in my country:
1940s - Sinisinta kita
1950s - Iniirog kita
1960s - Iniibig kita
1970s and so forth - Mahal kita
Modern times - I love you
Since Pinoys (what we are called) are sort of used to Taglish (mixture of Tagalog and English) these days, we are also used to saying "Love kita." :)
