EDIT. 28th April 2009 -
I've now read some from The Vampire Armand and Marius indeed seems to have been very, very different kind of persona 400-600 years before the time in The Vampire Lestat & Queen of the Damned books.
But even so, I still prefer more the film version - in general again. Never liked any version purely as they are. I like to mix them up a little. But if I had to make a pick between movie and book version, it was, is and always will be, this.
It might be different if Anne Rice had wrote Marius in some sort of balance and not drastically change the way he is. Marius's case reminds me of Dumbledore's character from Harry Potter saga. He was the perfect, serene and wise character for numerous books untill all the sudden he got more colour and even some black colour on him but it doesn't really make the earlier book version any less colourless.
Makes me wonder if these ladies really thought the characters through before they began to write, and then all the sudden got bored / wanted something totally different of the characters.
I know. But the pick is about the personality. You shouldn't be caring about the pictures anyways. I only put them to make this more visual pick that would not be so dull looking.
"Second of all, if you bothered to read the books, you would know that he was more of a badass in the books then he was in the movie, although Vincent is a terrific actor, he wasn't right for Marius."
As I state in that comment of mine I know Marius only by the two first books he appears in. SO I clearly said I am stating my opinion on that knowledge and impression I've got by them. In other words that I acknoledge I do not know the book Marius completely. So no need to get all worked up out there.
Well that's the feeling I got from your choice of phrase "if you bothered to" and please do not state your opinion as a fact. You may think he's more bad-ass in the books than in the movie but some may not. And however, I do not see myself mentioning in that comment the word "bad-ass". I say "colourful", "cool", "dynamic" and "fun", which do not defy a "bad-ass", at least not necessarily or completely - again a matter of an opinion, nor a fact.
I know for a fact there are - amongst people who have read the books all completely - some who think like me on this pick and know there are some who think like you, meaning prefer Marius from the books.
he's not so realistic though.Spending alot of time by himself he'd be completely batty and would have no social skills.
I wonder whats he's doing now with out the Queen and King to look after, i mean theyve been his undead life for centuries. Lestat never says much about what he does without them. I hope hes got a hobby so he doesnt go mad.
Plus he has Pandora. They kinda make a neat family, mummy daddy and baby Lestat. lol
I think Marius is the amazing character he is because he has better social skills that the rest put together.
