I think they will eventually. After the Ruby and Sapphire remakes, by now they have at least one generation of Pokemon games playable and tradable for some kind of DS (Gen II HG/SS, Gen III AS/OR, Gen IV D/P/Pl, Gen V Black/White, etc.) EXCEPT the first generation, which is still only playable for Gameboy (Red/Blue/Yellow) and Gameboy Advance (FR/LG).

Plus, it's the game that started it all and still regarded very fondly by many fans. And Pokemon games print money. They might not do it now or in the next few years, but at some point I wager they WILL remake the first generation games.

Although Fire Red/Leaf Green was the remake of the original Kanto Blue/Green/Red series, however it would be pretty cool if they made a remake of it for a later generation handheld console,it could definitely happen for sure!

I've wondered before if they'll sort of loop back around and remake the old games again. I don't know that they will because they've got a sort of pattern running with the new-new games and the remakes. The other thing could be to remake them after the main series has ended, but I don't think the main series of games would stop until Nintendo itself stops, or it loses, like, 95% of its popularity, both of which are unlikely.
It would be really cool to see a Red/Blue remake on the 3DS, though, so they should. At least that first generation because it was the beginning. Maybe on a big anniversary year for the franchise!
