usually, except for a select few. I look at my pokemon for the compatibility with me as a trainer. I'd prefer Scyther to Scizor because the evolutions means less speed.

it depends on the situation. if im in a tight spot and i need extra help, i'll evolve my pokemon if they can. but most of the time i don't evolve them to see what moves they'll get, since when you have basic-staged pokemon they learn moves faster.

I used to, now I evolve some. I never evolve my starter though, because they learn moves faster. Like my Squirtle in FireRed, it's level 54 and it knows Hydro Pump and Skull Bash! I think Blastoise learns that later.
