As I got out of the car, the scent of every kind of food hit me. The scent of every kind of perfume hit me. The scent of anything and everything hit me. This was how I described the city, anything and everything. It could be a home, a vacation spot, a time of romance, a fighting arena, a school, anything you could imagine, and that’s what I loved about it.
Argus got out of there as fast as he could, I think he likes it back at the camp, but for some reason driving us around is his job. I kept looking up at the tall buildings that made everyone seem smaller, and I thought about how the city made everything so much more… fun. Grover and Percy were talking while I sat on the concrete with my book in my hand, although I wasn’t exactly concentrated on the book. I was thinking about how I loved it here, how some day I wanted to live here. Maybe not even New York, but a city. I remember… that one time, my dad, he took me to Philadelphia to see William Penn on the top of city hall, and the Liberty Bell, and the first zoo ever created, it was just so magical. And I remember I was standing on the balcony of my hotel, and I saw all the lights reflecting on the Delaware River, and the tall building I someday want to build. And for the first time in my life, I didn’t remember feeling scared to go back home to my stepmom, I wasn’t thinking about when the night was going to end, I was thinking in the moment. Right then and there was the only thing on my mind, and I felt… infinite.
When my thoughts were interrupted by rain drops starting to fall onto my book page, we ran for cover and sat on the benches. It looked like more rain came down every second and the drops blurred in with the city lights. After five minutes Grover, Percy and I started complaining so Grover pulled out an apple and we played hacky sack. It wasn’t exactly my game, but I wasn’t the worse, and Percy and Grover weren’t bad themselves. Once we actually had a game going we all started laughing and it didn’t feel like we were on a quest, it felt like I was playing around with my two friends. The moment before the game ended, it looked like slow motion. Percy passed the apple to Grover, and then time caught up with it self when Grover opened his mouth and much down the apple in one bite, not even a crumb left. At first we just stared at him in disbelief, but then we busted out laughing and just couldn’t stop. Percy and I were nearly falling off the benches and clutching our stomachs. Grover kept blushing and apologizing, but I couldn’t even here him over our roars of laughter.
When the bus came around we grabbed our bags quickly and stood in line to get on. Before we boarded the bus Grover and I looked at each other and he started sniffing and that feeling in my gut when a monster is around crept in my gut. It might have been nothing, maybe just anxiousness to start this quest, but I think I was just trying to convince myself of that. Percy noticed that Grover was acting strange and asked what was wrong, but Grover didn’t tell him, telling him would just make it more real. We got onto the bus and found three seats next to each other in the back. We put our bags away and I took out my Yankees cap which I kept playing with, and slapping against my knee. Everyone just thought it was a habit or a sign of me being nervous, but really it was what I did when I was unsure. And I hated being unsure of anything.
